leigh kitchen Posted October 2, 2009 Posted October 2, 2009 (edited) The British 13th Infantry Dvision of WWII was raised during the winter of 1945-46 from the British element of the 4th Indian Division which was returning to India from Greece, where it had been since November 1944, following the German withdrawal. Its divisional sign was a black horseshoe with white detail on a red square, the sign of the old 13th "Western" Division of WWI which had been disbanded on 17/3/19. The obvious assumption concerning the choice of the horseshoe as a divisional sign is that it's a good luck symbol choseen to counteract the bad luck of the number "13".
