Mervyn Mitton Posted February 1, 2010 Posted February 1, 2010 This interesting document came to light in a drawer reserved for medal papers - now we are searching to find the medals .... This document took two weeks from his death to be sent - however, they had probably sent a telegram. What is interesting is that it is hand signed by the Minister of Defence - Louis Botha. One of the more famous Boer, Boer War Generals and a highly respected man within South Africa.

One of the more famous Boer, Boer War Generals and a highly respected man within South Africa. Very interesting. As you say, Gen Botha was highly respected (except by the hardline right-wing nationalists, of course). At the time, he was actually the prime minister, but he was also acting as defence minister while the actual minister, Gen Smuts, was away on active service in German East Africa.
