Another new arrival. Awarded to Edward Holloway of the 1st Battalion, 2nd Regiment.

    Date Instituted: 1861.

    Campaign: Second China War 1857-60.

Description: The obverse shows the diademed head of Queen Victoria with the legend 'VICTORIA REGINA'. The reverse has the same coat of Royal Arms and shield found on both the First and Third China War medals with the inscription 'ARMIS EXPOSCERE PACIM' and the word 'CHINA' in the exergue below. The suspender is the same as that for the India Mutiny Medal being of an ornate horn design.

    Metal: Silver.

    Size: 36mm.

Clasps: 'FATSHAN 1857', 'CANTON 1857', 'TAKU FORTS 1860' and 'PEKIN 1860'.

    Ribbon: china_wars_medal.gif

Naming: Naming appears in indented Roman capitals for both the army and marines while naval medals were issued un-named.

Comments: Few collectors will have seen an original example of the first type of ribbon and it appears issues began with the second ribbon from the outset. Some collectors suggest the first ribbon was never, in fact, manufactured.

    Obverse:

Another superb addition to the collection. I always like the original spelling of Peking.

Thanks Mervyn. The auto-spell check doesn't like PEKIN either ;)
