Strapper Posted September 27, 2010 Posted September 27, 2010 This is a button hole badge with orange sun rays behind a figure that looks a lot like the traditional depiction of De Wet on medals and badges. Anyone seen one the same or knows its origins. No makers marks of any sorts. Thanks Strapper
Mervyn Mitton Posted September 29, 2010 Posted September 29, 2010 I would think a membership badge for one of the many Afrikaans Societies that sprang up after the Boer War. However, I've never seen this particular one before. Interesting that you could put two interpretations for the picture. 1. Saying 'Farewell' as the sun sinks - or, 2. The sun is rising and the message would be - 'we will return'.
Strapper Posted September 30, 2010 Author Posted September 30, 2010 Thanks Mervyn, I was looking at images used for De Wet on medals and orders. He always seems to be shown with riding crop raised. But your right there are a myriad of Afrikaans societies with badges. It will remain unknown for the time being. Thanks David
