Two decorations have been created to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Interior Troops (VV MVD), a medal and a breast badge.

Internal troops wear the same uniform as members of the armed forces. There are many ways to identify them as Internal Troops.

They wear a red beret. Their ministerial and departmental medals and badges (for merit etc) will all be Interior MInistry (MVD) awards.

Eventhough they use the same cap cockades as the regular armed forces, they wear the ministerial eagle of the MVD over it (vice the Defense Ministry eagle).

You will always find the patch of Internal Troops (red cross on white background) on their left upper sleeve and their district patch on the right upper sleeve.

The keen eye will have noticed the leading officer in the top picture wearing many combat valour awards. Internal Troops were used extensively in the Caucasus and Chechnya alongside regular formations.

TacHel, the colour of beret is dark red, bloody red - "краповый". In camouflage marching the detachment of 21st separate brigade special purpose "21 отдельная бригада особого назначения- 21 ОБрОН" , "Софринская". Only they wear "krapovy beret" to right, usually (others special force of Interior Troops of MIA) wears to left. You can check: www.bratishka.ru or ask immediatelly of former company commander of this brigade - Valery Chernyshov (lives in Toronto now ).

Very interesting info, I had no idea. I remember seeing berets hanging on the opposite side but figured regulations had changed or the pics had been posted backwards as is so often seen in magazines or books. Thanks for the heads up! Very much appreciated!

    I wasn't aware of the 21st OBRON's beret either--that's great info!

Frank: In addition to the red beret's of the 21st and the MVD Spetsnaz, there's also a newer one introduced more recently--a green beret for intelligence, which is about the same hue as the Border Troops green, if I recall right (ie, but not as dark as US green berets).
