Jaybo Posted November 2, 2011 Posted November 2, 2011 Gentlemen, In a least two portraits of Franz Joseph (one earlier life painting, one later-life photo), he is seen wearing what clearly is an Order of Saint George, 4th Class Knight's badge (Imperial Russia). Does anyone know when he received it, why it was bestowed and how it was granted? Thanks.

He was wearing it as a message for the hungarians... He stopped to wear it after 1914. Regards, Viktor
Iver Posted November 9, 2011 Posted November 9, 2011 ...as Viktor wrote, emperor Franz Joseph I. was awarded the St. George cross for the battle of Gyor in 1849, but as far as I know, he was wearing it because it was the only decoration he was awarded for his bravery (as an army-leader) and not as an emperor and king....
