BorgCymru Posted February 13, 2012 Posted February 13, 2012 Lookg for the correct medals for someone who served in the British Army in India (NWP) 1930 and Egypt in 1929 Thanks
jeffskea Posted March 5, 2012 Posted March 5, 2012 Hello, For service on the North West Frontier in 1930 a British Army soldier would be entitled to the India General Service Medal 1908-35 with clasp "NW Frontier 1930-31". There were no service medals for service in Egypt in 1929, the closest for operations in the region would be the Khedive's Sudan Medal 1910 however there were no campaign clasps issued after 1922. To the best of my knowledge I do not believe there were any full British Army units entitled to that particular medal, mostly Indian/Egyptian units with British officers on attachment, some RAF as well. Hope this helps. Jeff
BorgCymru Posted March 7, 2012 Author Posted March 7, 2012 I know some of the 10th Hussars where deployed there. I wounder if a GSM would have been issued
BorgCymru Posted March 7, 2012 Author Posted March 7, 2012 Also noted they served in Ireland in 1920s Would there have been a medal issued for this operation ?
jeffskea Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 The first five clasps to the GSM 1918-62 were all issued for operations in the Iraq/Kurdistan/Persian areas: 'S. Persia', 'Kurdistan', 'Iraq', 'NW Persia', 'Southern Desert Iraq', and "Northern Kurdistan', followed by 'Palestine' starting in 1936. The 10th Royal Hussars had returned to the UK by 1936 so chances are they would not have been entitled to any campaign medals during the inter-war period other than possibly the IGS 1908-35 if they served on the NW Frontier, or in Burma around that time. There are 4 possible clasps they could have received during that time: 'NW Frontier 1930-31, 'Burma 1930-32', 'Mohmand 1933' or 'NW Frontier 1935' - however being garrisoned in India didn't always guarantee operational service with entitlement to a medal. Regarding service in Ireland, again no campaign medals were issued, however I have seen some individuals who received decorations during those operations, usually a MBE to an officer or a Medal of the Order of the British Empire or Meritorious Service Medal to an NCO.
