Robin Lumsden
I'm now hooked on Westerwald revival pottery, by Gerz, c. 1885. Cheap as chips and great quality salt glaze stoneware. A jug showing Arminius and others ..................

Mervyn Mitton
Hi - Robin. I think these are an excellent thing to collect - prices have remained steady with them - and are not excessive. Mind you - the correct place to display them is important - too many, and all over the place could make a room very sombre. I will draw the attention of the advisory panel and let's see if we can find any further info. Mervyn
Robin Lumsden
The correct place to display them is important - too many, and all over the place could make a room very sombre. They are well spread out about the house, Mervyn. Anyway, my place is sombre enough with the 'skull collection'. ;)

Mervyn Mitton
A lovely matched pair, Robin. I can just imagine them either end of a Victorian mantleshelf ! Is the one on the left marginally less in height - might just be the angle ? Mervyn
Robin Lumsden
Hello Mervyn. Both are a perfect match. Both stamped with the late 19th Century version of the Gerz mark and matching model numbers. 'X' marks the spot were they now reside. I've filled them with cinnamon potpourri !! Mervyn Mitton
Robin - your collection is growing well - and with some very attractive pieces. I think it will prove to be a good investment. Mervyn
Robin Lumsden
Thanks, Mervyn. These things can be picked up on eBay for a very small fraction of the cost that they go for at the big auction houses. The eBay sellers often don't know what they are selling ! :)
Robin Lumsden
Latest additions. I stick to the late 19th Century stuff. These are 'Victorian' reproductions of 16th Century designs but the quality and finish are identical to the Renaissance originals. This one has the Green Man ............... Robin Lumsden
And, as a curio, a little beaker with the Munich Maid. A tourist item, c. 1900. All of these are by Gerz.
Mervyn Mitton
Some more excellent examples Robin. Do you have specialist dealers looking for you - or, find them as you visit shops and markets ? I have enjoyed watching this collection grow. Robin Lumsden
Hello Mervyn. In short .................. all but one of them came from eBay. Careful daily scrutiny of all the search permutations pays off in the end. For example, the Green Man jug cost the princely sum of £5 GBP. It's over 100 years old, and MINT, MINT, MINT !!! Robin Lumsden
Pitcher likewise. These Gerz items make good original 'decorator' pieces, I think.
Robin Lumsden
Latest addition. This one was made c.1909, but points to the future rather than the past. It features a Germanic spiral sunwheel, much beloved of the Third Reich, and was designed by Paul Wynand, who was to become Professor at the Institute for Applied Arts in Berlin between 1934 and 1944. He also had a hand in designing the Olympic Stadium, 1936.
