Although Trieste was a larger city and probably the larger port, Pula and not Trieste was the main naval base. Great Roman ampitheatre, still seats 25,000.

PS: The Biggins books are fantastic. My wife wants to kidnap his youngest child and hold the kid for ransom until he promises to write another book for the series.
