    Hello Everyone,

I'm looking for information on Metropolitan Police Constable Arthur Grover.

He joined the Met on 25/9/1899 and left on 20/12/1902. He had Warrant Number 85536 and served in E Division.

The most interesting point about P.C. Grover's short career was that he retired with a Gratuity on 20/12/1902.

He was awarded the 1902 Coronation Medal.

Any information about Arthur Grover would be much appreciated especially information about his gratuity.

    Thank you all in advance.

Cat - when I left the Met. after 7 years service, I was not eligible for a pension - that requires 25 or, 30 years service. If I

remember rightly my years of service that had contributed towards a pension were put together and returned to me. I think

they called this a 'gratuity' - but could be wrong. With such a short service I doubt if it was very much. Mervyn

UK National Archives - Ref MEPO/4/417

Arthur Israel Grover - dob 23/06/1878 - born Tonbridge Wells, Kent (although the census records show Speldhurst, Kent) - single man with occupation as printer - living at St Johns Road Epping.

On joining the Metropolitan police he was 21 years old, 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighed 10st 8lbs, had a 35 inch chest with fresh complexion, blue eyes and brown hair.

Public service - Prior to joining the police he had served two and a half years with the 1st Essex Volunteers.

The 1901 Census shows him as living at Holborn police station (E Div) along with other constables.

Arthur was retired unfit for service in 1902 and given a gratuity - he appears to have died in 1908.

    Hope this helps

Thank you both so much. Clearly Arthur Grover was not a well man if he died in 1908. Presumably he was still a relatively young man.

Once again thank you both, I always appreciate the help I get through this site.

    Regards,

    David
