Swordguy Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 This one doesn't have a "story"--it's just a remarkably nice Schutztruppen sword. The blade was made in 1890 and used for the new M1891 colonial pattern. The "Grosse" guard is spectacular. Everything else is proofed--indicating a senior NCO issue sword. Of particular note is the sword knot--first I've ever seen on ANY colonial sword. The grip cipher was altered to the Reichs crowned W in 1913. The 2-ring nickled scabbard had a ring removed and then it was de-nickled and blued. This one saw a lot of service!!!!

piekenier Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 Really lovely sword in a very good condition considering its age.The senior NCO sword knot is 100% correct I believe, with the black leather strap having red stitching down the centre
Guest Rick Research Posted September 1, 2013 Posted September 1, 2013 It's hard to make out with the patina, but I suspect the usual twisted colors like in the shoulder board insignia were probably in there when bright and shiny. The Siebentritt auction didn't have a ST Portepée, and I've never seen one on any colonial sword ever offered for sale back into the 1980s. Rather made up for a flat tire and Biblical downpour and thunder and lightning getting back onto The Island today. (Sometimes I travel TO a stop of the Traveling Museum.)
