Milpol Posted May 5, 2015 Posted May 5, 2015 (edited) j Thought I would share just the small amount of South African Police memorabilia I have in my collection. Not sure what the Transvaal helmet plate is made of. The badge has a light golden sheen to it. I thought it might be brass but it is too light so I think it must be an alloy of some type. As can be seen, the detail has remained beautifully intact. Edited May 15, 2015 by Nick
leigh kitchen Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 Interesting thread on SAP insignia here:http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46634Apart from perhaps a shoulder title or button or two, all I have in the way of SAPSAP insignia is this helmet plate.Isn'Isn't the springbok head badge you show SA infantry? Is it a police badge?
Mervyn Mitton Posted June 11, 2015 Posted June 11, 2015 (edited) The Springbok head is marked SAI for South African Infantry. I think you will find that the Transvaal Helmet Plate is nickel - at least I remember them being so from the examples I have handled. They were only in existence for a few years and took over from the South African Constabulary in 1908 - they became part of the new South African Constabulary in 1912.They must not be confused with the Transvaal Town Police who policed the Jo'burg, Pretoria and Witwatersrand areas from 1902 to 1908 and came under the S.A.Constabulary. Milpol Posted July 12, 2015 Author Posted July 12, 2015 Thank you for the replies, guys. When I got the SA badges group I was told that they were police and I took it as told. Now I know.Mervyn, bit confused by your answer, your last para says, " Not to be confused with the Transvaal Town Police" but the badge is TTP?
