John Metz
I'm trying to help a friend gather some more information about a portrait she has of her g-g-grandfather. He was born in Austria c.1840, and he is in a military uniform. She believes it dates to circa 1867. I know just enough about Austro-Hungarian military history to be dangerous, but the portrait looks later to me. To me, he appears to be an enlisted (no markings on the collar tabs) Hussar based on the dark blue tunic and the dark red side cap. Does anyone have any other insight? And, can you point me to any references where she might read up on Austro-Hungarian Hussar regiments? I assume they were organized regionally, and I don't know where he was from exactly. Thanks in advance! P.S. She tells me that he was from present day Leshniv, Ukraine.
