History of medal hangera

Hi all, is there a story of how the rules of wearing medals on a hangers changed within decades? Apart from the German or Dutch mounting, I mean just the timeline when approximately the modern "broken" ones were introduced and what was the main rules of wearing the earliest medals up to 1904/5 war - on many photos they seem hanging on a simple metal stick.
