Found M44 SS Pea Pattern Cap - original?

Hi. I found this M44 SS Pea Pattern Cap today. Wondered peoples thoughts on it. Could it be original? 

 

It has faint stampings, a date of 1943 and size 57. A makers mark in a circle, but it is hard to make out. There are also two pinholes, possible for a skull in the front.
