No one Posted March 7 Posted March 7 Dear Gentlemen, Presentation of the South Vietnamese Navy (Hải Quân Việt Nam Cộng Hòa) ship "Giang Pháo Hạm HQ 331 - LSIL / Landing Ship Infantry Large (Tầm Sét* is the name of the ship)": Landing Craft Infantry LCI(L)-872 (navsource.org) giang-phacc81o-hacca3m.pdf (wordpress.com): ~HQ 331Tầm Sét: - Started construction September 4, 1944, at New Jersey Shipbuilding, Barber NJ - Launched October 3, 1944, joined the US Navy on October 10, 1944, number USS LCI(L)-871 operates in the Pacific region. - Transferred number LSIL-871 (February 28, 1949) - Transferred to French HQ January 8, 1953 as RFS-L9033, returned to HK when France left Vietnam, returned to the HQHK Reserve Fleet - Delivered to HQVN in 1956 and became HQ-331Tầm Sét. ~ HQ-331 (1957-58) was selected as VIP ship to transport President Ngo Dinh Diem. She was also used as a reception place for the Government (including Mrs. Nhu) when receiving foreign delegations. - On April 30, 1975 headed for Poulo Panjang then from here on May 1, sailed to Singapore. Arrived May 4 and temporarily anchored there awaiting Singapore Government decisions. Then departed on 9 May for Subic Bay, arrived there on May 18, 1975. When HQ-331 arrived at Subic Bay, the US transferred it to HQ Phi, renamed LS-53 *"Tầm Sét" means "lightning /fulgurite" (from Latin fulgur 'lightning').
