On 25 November a sortie was made to ascertain the strength of the enemy at Carter’s Ridge where the Boers had established a gun emplacement. In a co-ordinated assault, with the armoured train acting as decoy and the flanks protected by Royal Engineers at Otto’s Kopje, a combined artillery/infantry force under Lt-Col Chamier and mounted forces under Lt-Col Scott Turner completely surprised the Boers.

On the Boer side, according to the Official Casualty returns published in the ZAR Government Gazette, 11 men were killed, 23 wounded and 31 (including 6 of the wounded) taken prisoner.
British losses were 6 killed and 29 wounded.
