8 JANUARY 1901 - ATTACK ON CONVOY NEAR BREEDTS NEK

Early in January Lieut Gen French’s columns (Babington, Paget, Plumer and Clements) were patrolling the Magaliesberg and Hekpoort Valley. Brig Gen Gordon’s column patrol area was south of Breedts Nek (the Boers chief passage through the mountains).

 

On the 8th Beyers fell in with a convoy for Gordon coming from Krugersdorp. The Boers were repulsed with loss.

In a 1903 publication of Beyers and Kemp, it is noted that the incident took place at a plantation on the farm Rietfontein and because “the British took position in the trees” Beyers was unsuccessful.
