Private O’Brien was also entitled to the clasp SA 1901, which was sent separate from the others. Interestingly, O’Brien retained the original shaped wire hanger from which the medal was suspended when presented by the King. According to a Regimental Order dated 8 October 1900 O’Brien was in a group who left that day to join the Transvaal Police. However, he and 16 of the group returned to duty in the Regiment on 19 October, “having declined to join the Transvaal Police”
