Brief history:

- 27 June 1977 creation of the 1st Infantry Regiment / 1er Régiment d’Infanterie (RI)
- 1979 change of name to Commando Intervention Regiment / Régiment Commando d’Intervention (RCI)
- 1989 makes way for the Southern Group / Groupement Sud

- 2004 the latter gives way to the Dikhil Combined Arms Regiment / Régiment Interarmes de Dikhil (RIAD)

- Note: the Southern Group and RIAD kept the insignia of the RCI.

- FAR /  Force d’Action Rapide : the Rapid Reaction Force was part of the RCI and Southern Group until October 1, 2003, when it became the Rapid Reaction Regiment (Regiment d' action Rapide / RAR) stationed at Arta.
