Poland's Auschwitz Cross.

Anyone know anything about this medal?  I read it ceased award in 1999, and I wonder why.  I know it's been reproduced, of course, but I read there are two versions.  Presumably one Communist and one post-Communist.

Auschwitz Cross (Krzyz Oswiecimski), originally instituted on 14 March 1985 by the People's Repuplic and awarded to those held prisoner in Auschwitz and other concentration camps established by the Germans in WW2. It was revised in 1990, the change being to the national initials on the reverse.
