ChrisKelly Posted Monday at 08:29 Posted Monday at 08:29 Can anyone explain why there are wide variations in the standard pattern 4 and 12 year military service medals, to wit, the talons clutching the swastika on the obverse, and the bands around the oak leaf wreath on the reverse? I thought, given the extensive measure of fairly strict standardization in the manufacture of awards during the Third Reich, variations would not be so obviously pronounced. Images below from my collection. Bottom row, left, is a 1957 version. Bottom row, right, is a modern fake. 18 year service cross included for reference.
