svapr Posted yesterday at 10:39 Posted yesterday at 10:39 In this post I would like to share with you some information about a medal that I think is not very well known. It is a bronze medal with a diameter of 31 mm created in 1901 for the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Dragoon Regiment No. 6 (Dragonerregiment - Nr. 6). The author of the medal was the famous Viennese medalist Peter Breithut. On the obverse is a bust of Octavio Piccolomini, who was the founder of the regiment. On the reverse is a bust of Archduke Franz Salvator (1866 – 1939), who was the commander of this regiment at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The regiment's history is interesting. Since its formation in 1701, it has participated in many combat operations in Germany, Hungary and Italy. In the 19th century, the dragoons distinguished themselves in the Napoleonic battles of Ulm and Wagram. The regiment's last major combat engagement was in 1866 at the Battle of Náchod. Paradoxically, that was where the regiment's founder also came from. Until the end of the 19th century, the regiment was not deployed on any other battlefield. On June 22, 1901, large celebrations of the 200th anniversary of its founding were held in Enns. Members of the regiment who participated in the celebrations received the commemorative medal described above and five days off from Archduke Franz Salvatore as a memento.
