Naxos
Can anybody identify this unit and the arm badge? Thanks. Schoulder Strap appears to be Artillerie. The arm badge looks like Jäger-Sturmbataillon 3. Could it be a crew member of one of the 6 Infanteriegeschütze with Sturmbataillon. I'm sure Chip will have the answer Edited April 12, 2010 by Naxos
Thomas W
The arm badge looks like Jäger-Sturmbataillon 3. I didn't know that Jäger- (Sturm-) Bataillon Nr. 3 had an arm badge. Would you happen to have a clear image of it? Edited April 12, 2010 by Thomas W
Thomas W
Here's another man in the same photo. His shoulder strap looks like it has a crude "J" and "3" on it. (The strap is enlarged in the upper left corner.) Edited April 12, 2010 by Thomas W
Naxos
Sorry Thomas, I mean Jäger-Regiment Nr. 3 see here: http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=40524&st=0&p=375290&fromsearch=1&#entry375290

Chip
Thomas, Does anyone else in the photo appear to be wearing a similar sleeve patch? It is unusual to see insignia on the right arm. I can't make anything out in the close-up. Could it be a flaw in the photo? There is no photographic evidence that I know of for a sleeve patch for the Jäger Rgt.Nr.3 or Sturmbataillon Nr.3. Would a closer scan of the shoulder strap of the other soldier show anything more? An Infanterie-Geschütz Batterie would have the letters "IG" or "JG" underneath the bomb, with a unit number below that. Chip
Thomas W
Chip, the more I enlarged the image, the crummier it becomes. Nobody else in the photo is wearing anything on his right sleeve. This isn't a flaw in the photo, because the design bulges out and curves right where there's a large, smooth wrinkle in the sleeve cloth. The design follows the contours of the wrinkle.
