Peter C Posted June 19, 2007 Posted June 19, 2007 GreetingsI have come accross the WW1 Maybaour U-boat badge and have posted a picture of the reverse.I can post more pictures if required but the interesting thing is the machine markings on the reverse. I wanted to know if this was typical of these badges or unusual.RegardsPeter
Peter C Posted June 20, 2007 Author Posted June 20, 2007 Not a lot of responces so far so I thought I would add some more pictures.I think the badge looks good but any comments would be appreciated. RegardsPeter
Scott Posted June 20, 2007 Posted June 20, 2007 (edited) The construction, pin, and diagonal lines on the back of your u-boat badge appear to match a Maybauer Silesian Eagle posted here: http://gmic.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=8598&st=60 (page 4, posts 67 & 68)...Scott Edited June 20, 2007 by Scott
Peter C Posted June 21, 2007 Author Posted June 21, 2007 ScottThanks for the link, the markings on the u-boat look exactly the same as those on the Silesian Eagle.Does any one know how common these marks are on other Maybauer badges.regardsPeter
Gordon Williamson Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 These sorts of machining striations are typical of what one would expect on a genuine Walter Schott badge. I've never before seen an original Meybauer like this. There are enough (albeit subtle) differences between this one and known originals that I'd have some hesitation over it. The weakness of the after periscope when seen from the reverse, the flat as opposed to curved sides to the crown, the curvature of the outermost parts of the ribbon at the top of the wreath etc.It could well be good, but Meybauer and Schott badges have been heavily reproduced so any which differ from the norm need caution.Compare the ringed areas with this fine original which belongs to Michel.
Peter C Posted June 21, 2007 Author Posted June 21, 2007 GordonThanks very mutch for the responce. It was a badge I was possibly thinking about purchasing but will leave it were it is as it is a badge not high on my wants list.It is quite interesting that you do get these marks on the back of Maybauer Selesian eagles though.RegardsPeter
