    Book "Irish Police Guide" 1924

    Recommended Posts

    Hi guys,

I bought two books as a lot from auction. One of them is a keeper but the second one is Police related and I need some advice. I would like to sell it but does any of you can advise me with the value and also where to try to sell it (ebay?).

Now about the book. It is in very good condition green colour old style book from 1924. "The Irish Police Guide - for the use of the Civic Guard and the Police Forces of Northern Ireland".by John Herman Rice. Eight edition. Printed Dublin 1924.

Also inside is a note about the owner: Garda J.F.Gallagher. Reg.No. 2468 Five Mile Boume (????)

Anyway, does anyone have been dealed anything like this before.

    Regards,

    Timo

Timo - the dissolution of Ireland happened in 1922 when Southern Ireland became Eire - and Northern Ireland remained part of Britain.

This makes your instruction book interesting for several reasons. Firstly it refers to Northern Ireland - but was printed in Dublin.

Secondly - the man's title is Garda - who were the independent Eire police.

The title actually indicates it is a ref. book for both forces. Either way your Garda would have been one of the first appointed - look how low his number is ?

I think you should keep-it - if you wish to sell one of our members - go back on this Forum - specifically collects old Irish police material and may be interested ? What was the other book ? Mervyn

Thanks for the info and I will try to make a contact with some local GMIC collector, who may be interested. I just can't collect or keep everything. I am still trying to collect too many different areas anyway.

I am not sure are the early Garda numbers even researchable; I should hop in to their archive in Dublin. It is pretty near by where I pass every day.

Second book is "The Great War 1914-1918 Bank of Ireland Staff Service records". Printed 1920. I like it for many reasons.

First at all it is nice antique piece herself. There is tons of reference material about the soldiers who fought in Irish related British units + pictures. Some facts are something, what i haven't seen before. And last, I feel I have to have it in my book shelf because I am currently working in the same institution :).

    Regards,

    Timo
