20th November 1931, Bentley Colliery, Doncaster, Yorkshire
Originally awarded the Edward Medal for saving miners in a firedamp rescue.
In 1971 living holders of the Albert or Edward Medal could exchange their medals for a George Cross as it was realised the import of the Edward and Albert Medals had been lost and overshadowed by the George Cross. Frank Sykes must have exchanged his.
I believe like VC holders GC holders are awarded Coronation and Jubilee Medals. Unless I am mistaken AM & EM holders obviously were not included in that list until they exchanged in the early 70's. That is unless this tradition only started with the 77 jubilee ?

I see he was originally awarded the Edward Medal. I am surprised that he was not also awarded an ERII Coronation medal.

I agree this needs to be thrashed out in the EK Section. So I have moved it there.

Look forward to hearing this mans tale ! As you say what a modern anglicised name (David Singh) for such a period medal group.

There are a number of fake Bronze BWM out there. They are pretty good copies, die struck in Bronze but what gives them away is that the almost mint condittion, some are unamed but I have also seen badly named versions.
As shown by these examples originals have a tendency to have been roughly handled, and or worn.

Hi Matt
Nice to see you here !
Although I do not operate in the same league as the two twins , I do have more than a passing interest in medal bars and ribbons. What also stands out to me is the poor alignment of the ribbons themselves just look at the EK2 & 25 year ribbon and how it sits on the bar. Not something in itself for major concern but added to the other things just supports further bad vibes. If you can?t get a black light I can send you a small one in the post for loan, if it helps, let me know.

I also have been caught out with this type of packet. I bought a bunch of envelopes from a well known dealer which included a few of these type of Ek2s in the bunch. Some were faded and worn others were mint.
Marcus has conducted some excellent research into this area and I hope he can enlighten us all

I didn't realize that about the stick pin, thanks for the info.
Any one got any more tinnies to show ?
The 1933 Reichsparteitag tinnie has yet to be shown (which came in Bronze and I think also in Silver) I will get my heavy bronze one out and photograph it later.

A very interesting item worth every penny for the history alone.
It was fashionable to glass in medals during this time. The Trafalgar Medal issued to Captains is another example of this type of glass seal over the obverse and reverse.

A few more Nurnberg tinnies (non Reichsparteitag). This is my favourite tinnie. Simple yet very well made.

Gentlemen
I have tidied this thread up, call it censorship of you will, but it is my prerogative and I was unhappy with what was occurring here!
I have said time and time again that old hostilities and feuds are not welcome here ! I am fully aware that in some members eyes this may make somewhat of a false environment, but if you cannot publicly speak civilly to one another here despite differences or previous experiences, then simply ignore the member concerned and do not post ANYTHING !
I will say the same for Personal Messages some of which were forwarded and made public as a consequence of this thread.
I would prefer that PMs are used to resolve differences out of public eye, and I am realistic about modern vocabulary and its usage in private conversations. However that does not mean they are to be used for chucking abuse back and forth between members, who have a dislike for one another. I do not monitor PM's as I feel that members privacy is paramount. But I have the ability to do so and will if a concern is raised. If a Personal Message is brought to my attention by another member of GMIC with regards members who abuse the PM system, if warranted they will face a warning and suspension. In extremis they will face being banned. All parties concerned (you know who you are) please take this as a final warning.
Now as for the topic of this thread, Tom Hansen is no longer welcome at GMIC. Despite this he still is a figure in the collecting world and I am not blinkered or petty minded enough to stop a link to information that he has published. Regardless of whether you agree with it or not, it is still thought provoking work and worthy of constructive comment. Now lets see if we can all act like gentlemen, show some decorum and get back to a reasoned debate.
If you can't this topic will sadly be closed and action taken against the individuals concerned.

If I recall correctly Himmler wanted to originally call them the British Legion. That was until it was pointed out that there was already a British Legion (British Ex Servicemans Organisation) !!
