Having only really researched WWI & WWII medals can anyone point me in the right direction for researching a soldier who fought in the Sudan & Boer War ? Are there any regimental records for this era (he is North Staffs Regiment)
Thanks

Another fantastic group, your collection is very impressive, thanks for sharing it with us.
What happened to Wilhelm Funke did he survive the war? It is unusal to have such a complete collection of medals and documents together.

I sold this a couple of years ago and now I regret selling it as it was a nice example. Is anyone able to explain exactly what it was issued for. I had an alleged photo of the recipient as well I have a copy somewhere.

I know that Pikemedals has got the criteria for the award of the defence medal, hopefully he will post it.
It was actually a pretty hard medal to be awarded as the criteria was pretty stringent and revolved around home service. Many troops who served overseas and even with periods at home would not have been entitiled to it.
For instance a police officer serving in London would have to have been serving for at least three years between 1939 to 1945 to have been awarded it.

This one I have always taken to be a fake. There is a feint lettering to the reverse f.o. I believe.

Very interesting diary, also a sad reminder of what sacrifice is.
Have you got pictures of the german entries, seems strange to think someone else would continue using another mans diary.

(I have just jiggled the post to make it easier to read)
It would be nice to get a list of these criteria for all WW2 awards.
