Anyone got any Austrian awards they want to show ?

Nice montage Laurence
John you have made a very good point re the positioning of the date.

It was in the Daily Mail and unfortunately I think it was the usual misinformation.
It related to DC Stephen Oak who was killed in 2003. What actually is happening is that a recommendation has been sent from the Chief Constable of Manchetster to the Cabinet Office for consideration to be given for a gallantry award.
The Daily Mail have got hold of this and seem to be pushing for a George Cross. I sincerely hope he gets some recognition, but whether it is a GC remains to be seen.

The London Gazette is also a good source as it publishes promotions for officers in all three services as well as awards and honours. The war years are all online.

I find it interesting that certain Day Badges/Commemorative Badges became semi official and even official awards which were worn long after the event. I believe this is one such award. Anyone got any more ?

Well Lt R.F. Bloor was promoted from 2 Lt to Lt on 20th December 1939 and transferred to the Royal Army Ordnance Corps from the RASC if this helps to answer your question

Interesting tinnie Don.
It never fails to amaze me the efforts the fakers go to. But I suppose its understandable for SS tinnies which demand high prices (as far as tinnies go that is). However I was in Vienna a few months back and I even found reproductions of the Seefahrt Ist Not tiinie which is as common as they come.

Thanks for the info on these pins. Jim you weren't the only one who knew nothing about them.
As for links to dealers sites I have no problem with posting links to dealers sites as long as it is context with a particular topic and not for commercial gain.

I hope it doesnt turn into one of them !
I visited the Naval Museum at Greenwhich a couple of weeks ago. Very dissapointing, far too much interactive activities, far too many school children running around pushing buttons and not enough exhibits !
Not a patch on the Royal Navy museum at Portsmouth which is excellent !

Interesting. The arrow usually indicates British Proof Mark but is it in this case ? Possibly NAD are initials with an arrow to show what way up the box should be on opening ?

Thanks for the offer but I have managed to find a few reference photo's in a book.
I would now like to find a repro sword for this period.
Easier said than done I think.

One of my areas of collecting is items relating to Nurnberg and the Reichsparteitags especially tinnies and day badges.
Any one else got anything nice ?

I know there are a few of you who collect mounted medal groups so lets see them.
Here is a small one to start.

DC Oak was stabbed to death by Kamel Bourgass the terrorist convicted last week on the Ricin charges. Bourgass went beserk in the flat where he had been detained, stabbing other officers. I believe DC Oak was outside the flat at the time of the attacks but ran inside and tried to tackle the man who had already nearly killed one officer. He was fatally stabbed himself as he prevented him escaping from the flat.
