    1. Here is a badge with some tongue in cheek humor about a not so humorous scenario. Hijack Club. In the background is a map of Lebanon with the dates of 77/78. The vehicle has U.N On the side and UNTSO plates. 'Truce Supervision Organization." Alongside the vehicle is the supposed hijacker, armed and with his head covered in wrap. It is a lucite covered badge which is made in Lebanon by Hamadeh. These Lucite or Plastic covered badges being attributed to Hamadeh are normally painted white on the reverse.

    2. 4 pocket badges from U.N. operations in the Mideast. At top left is U.N. Observer Group Golan Heights,Damscus. Top right U.N. Truce Supervision Organization / Observer Detachment Damascus. Bottom Left U.N Liaison Office Amman Jordan. Bottom Right U.N. Emergency Force/ U.N. Disengagement Observer Force Liaison Office in Jerusalem. All of these badge would likely been worn from a leather hanger French style from the pocket.

    3. Russian Contingent to UNPROFOR. The insignia implies this was an Airborne capable unit. There are 2 metal Russian pocket badges from this period that also display Airborne capabilities. I will post those later.

Here are 2 metal badges related to the U.N.Russian Contingents. 1st Russian Bn, stationed near Mostar and the 2d Russian Bn stationed near Sarajevo. These both have a post and screw type attachment on the reverse. Airborne capable.

    4. Well I struggled to figure out where to start this as there are other UN threads scattered about. But I will consider these Modern Conflicts. I will be posting mainly insignia, Metal and cloth. .Of course I would like others to post there insignia also. So here goes. The first is Hungarian troops with the U.N, these pieces I feel are likely made in Hungary. This would be from UNPROFOR in Jugoslavia. The smaller round patch is most likely a beret badge. While I will try and describe these insignia the best I can , corrections and additions will always be welcomed. As there is an ongoing U.N. Police thread I would like to steer clear of that for our purposes.

    5. Yes any additional info related to type and design will be appreciated. I must admit I do not know very much on these pieces. Is there a reference book you work from on these badges or from your own accrued knowledge?

Does Amabassade de Beyrouth refer to the Ambassador or the Embassy or is this a distinction without a difference. What would the duties of this individual be? Thanks John

    6. Thanks Les for the information on the Gendarm badges. 47 Different designs, I would have never thought that many. You are spot on with the description Of the Homologue # 696, most all of the badges have this. I am showing 2 of these badges again disassembled. the ONU Liban piece has a Arthur Bertrand maker mark while the Ecu shield is not marked and does appear to be of local manufacture. The FINUL Provost badge has a DRAGO made backplate and a DRAGO made Ecu..

    7. Mervyn,

There is a suitable sub-forum for the NON-POLICE U.N. badges and insignias it is

REST OF THE WORLD - Militaria and Histroy

It already has a thread on U.N. Medals, so don't see any reason why it couldn't have a thread for U.N. badges.

Personally, I would like to see the Military items moved out of the Police Sub-Forum, as most of the Website is FOR Military items, and with this small area designated for the discussion of POLICE items I don't think it would be unreasonable to have it available purely for the discussion of Police subjects.

This sub-forum is the reason I joined this Forum, if it is going to get cluttered with talk about military matters then there seems little point in logging on except to look at the pictures without taking part in the discussions.

      Best Regards,

      Les

Thank you Les, for the clarification on the Gendarmarie badge colors. Your observation regarding the cluttered look of some badges holds true in most all instances of supposed theater worn insignia. U.N insignia is a very broad and at times confusing area, it is likely best to post all non-police related pieces in a seperate sub forum. Best John

    8. Here is a small group of Indonesian Special Force, Airborne type cloth shoulder and pocket type patches. The Kostrad is the Indonesian Special Force Strategic Reserve, Amphibious and Airborne related troops. The large red patch in lower right corner is the basic paratrooper shoulder patch. The raider patches I am unsure of the specific type of troops used in raider units. And 2 Para commando patches. these patches were procured in the mid 80's and may now be obsolete. If any of our Indonesian members can shed more light and improve on my humble descriptions it will be most welcomed. Thanks John
