    1. Greetings;

      A question to those familiar with museums of Ottawa.  I will be in Ottawa this August, with my family, and they will indulge me the better part of a day on a museum of my choice.  The two obvious contenders are; The Canadian War Museum and the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum.

      Obviously, I have interest in the War museum, however I also have a strong interest in historical military aircraft.  I've examined both museums online and read reviews.

      Based on those that have been to each, which should I choose?  Or is there a better 3rd choice?

      Thank you in advance,

      -Claudius

      Thanks i now need to get a 14-15 star to the 36th Sikhs. Tsingtao related award will certainly enhance my Indian Army collection

      Paul

      or, the 14-15 Star to a 36th Sikh would enhance a Tsingtao collection.  Like mine!

      ...just kidding.  I'm just collecting german/axis groups who were in Tsingtao during the siege.  But I am keeping an eye out for a Japanese group who fought there.

    3. Wonderful bar Claudio!  But I especially like that you have the gentleman's significant career dates with battle history and award dates.  I sympathize with the "Qualifikations-Bericht".  I don't know what it is suppose to communicate.  It almost looks like a letter...to outline his qualifications to the promotions personnel?

      Might have to send those pages to a devoted Sutterlin translator.

      I am trying to identify these miniatures and hopefully the person it belonged to.

      I know very little about the Russian orders, but I list all as the auction house did:

      Royal Order of the Seraphim (Kungliga Serafimerorden)

      Order of Alexander Nevsky???

      Royal Order of the Sword (Kungliga Svärdsorden)

      Order of Saint Anna ???

      Order of the Polar Star (Nordstjärneorden)

      Order of Saint Vladimir ???

      Royal Order of Vasa (Kungliga Vasaorden)

      For Valour in the Field(För tapperhet i fält)

      The Medal for Outstanding Civic Service (Norwegian,Medaljen for Borgerdåd)

      The Norwegian Medal for Outstanding Civic Service has as far as I know only been awarded to two Swedish citizens in the current periode:

      Gustaf Carl Fredrik Löwenhielm and Nils Fredrik Palmstierna

      Can anybody help with the Russian orders, and maybe also the owner?

      This is an interesting hanger for the miniatures.  How is that slit used to attach the hanger to a uniform or dress coat?

    5. What I think is really interesting is his first award (after the Centennial).

      Wichard must have been recognized as a rising star.  Leutnant in 1893, Oberleutnant in 1900, makes Hauptman in 1907 and in October of that year recieves the Schamburg-Lippe House Order 3K!   The Siam award comes soon after.  In 1909 he picks up the Prussian Red Eagle 4K with Crown!

      He is being recognized by some influential people.

      I hope there is a photo of him.

      Of course it is not rare, but nice to see a Hindie with this combination... we usually expect a WW1 EK....b7.jpg.c944bcb271223c0a307fa60fcbf204f4.jpg

      :shame: wait a minute Chris.  By suggesting this is "not rare" you are commenting that this is a "common" combination.  However, lets read this ribbon bar again from what is here and what isn't.  This gentleman served in WWI and earned the Hindenburg non-combatant, and not the EK2 (1914).  Then WWII started and he earned BOTH the KVK2 WITH SWORDS and then an EK2(1939).  So, from a non-combatant in WWI with no awards to a decorated combatant in WWII.   (usually, its the other way around)

      I think that's kindof uncommon.  ;)

      Thanks a lot for clearing that up.

      I'm a compete novice/newbie to medal collecting and all the jargon and descriptions can be a bit overwhelming. I have yet to decide if I want to specialize in a specific area of collecting so I'm afraid I've bought medals that attracted my attention instead of developing a coherent collecting strategy first.

      No problem Wessel.  I can't speak for everyone, but as collectors we certainly can start collecting things that attract our attention.  And then we start researching and learning more where we gain a direction.

      Please feel free to post what items you collected thus far.  If you have a specific question -this forum is the place to ask.

    7. Hello;

      Can someone tell me the criteria for this Order to be awarded?  What merit/service/action would occur to earn the Order of Leopold?  What do the regulations on it's issuing say?

      Specifically, I am wondering;

      1) for the military class,

      2) awarded to a uniformed foreigner (military personnel).

      3) Time period; somewhere from 1860 to 1918.

      Could it be for; As a military liaison?  a Royal Court visit?  Recognized service to the country of Belgium?  Rescued a Belgium citizen from fire or drowning?
