For those that don't recognise the uniform and its medals: it's the uniform of General C.J. Snijders, supreme commander of the Dutch Army in 1914-1918 and founder of the Dutch Army Air Force.
It is missing the Grand Cross star of the House Order of the Golden Lion of Nassau however...

Great pictures!!!!
Lovely, So many high standard orders...
but still quite common for the staff generals....
Kind regards,
Jacky
... (sorry have to learn to read before I write)

yes it must be our man,
however aren't that quite low-graded awards for such a man in that old era??
I thought that most generals were going like christmas trees in those times???
Kind regards,
Jacky
Only those on staff duties or of nobility. But than again... that hasn't changed today

The best you can do is to use a database, you can make it your self see www.filemaker.com
whith this database programme you can make containerfields where you can store images, and files like PDF.
It is a very strong tool, it is even crossplatform and can be used on a Mac computer (Apple) or a PC.
Some museums are working with this tool to manage their collections see The succes story sorry that it is in dutch, but the Royal Army Museum is ussing this tool for different databases.
Aren't we spoiled in The Netherlands? Our rank lists from 1856-1900 are available in PDF, so are our Nobility Yearbooks till 1986, Ruling Families Yearbooks till 1992, and the pre-1900 Biographical Dictionaries. Very handy when researching (general) officers.
For most of my research I use online newspapers in combination with geanological websites. The last ones often refer to published sources elsewhere and an e-mail to the makers of these sites often result in very good information (often, not always).

Hi,
His name was Adolphe Henri Joseph COLIN of the 2e Regiment de Ligne, born on the 20March 1884 in what looks to be "Riviemonde" (Pays Bas)

Thanks Chris,
I will see what I can dig up for you in the Low Lands

Thank you Erik for that information.
I found a number of recipients of the Order of the Crown of Siam and of the Black star of Benin in a newspaper archive. But wasn't able to find a match.
http://kranten.kb.nl/index2.html
Do you have any idea how to procede? Do you know any other newspaper archives?
I've been through those pages to, but couldn't find a positive match either. There's also www.archiefeemland.nl, but haven't found a match there either. At the end of the year the KB will add about 20.000 more newspapers online.
I've also scanned through my police officer's yearbooks but no results there either. Unfortunately my earliest edition is 1933, so there would probably be more chance of succes - if this guy is a police officer - in the earlier editons.

Very interesting information about these police officers. Thanks for posting this. where police officers from places like Den Haag and Rotterdam also so heavily awarded with foreign awards?
I can not find any info about the visit from Siam. I can't even find a correct date. I'm now trying to find newspaper archives from that time periode.
Yes, other big city officers are also heavily decorated with foreign awards.
For example, The Hague:
Inspector F. Lori?:
Knight in the Order of the Crown of Belgium
Knight in the Order of Leopold II of Belgium
Decoration 2nd class of the German Red Cross
Decoration 2nd class of the Austrian Red Cross
Decoration of the Hungarian Red Cross
Commissioner Th.H.J. Besseling
Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau
Knight in the Order of the Sacred Treasure of Japan
Knight in the Order of the Crown of Belgian
IJmuiden
Commissioner D. de Ridder
Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau
Gold Cross for Faithful Police Service of the General Netherlands Police Union
Knight 3rd class in the Order of the Crown of Prussia
Officer in the Order of the Black Star of Benin
Vlissingen
Commissioner A.O.F.W.C. Gasinjet
Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau
Knight in the Order of the Crown of Belgium
Member of the Order of the British Empire
Medal of Gratitude in silver of France
Amsterdam
Commissioner K.H. Broekhoff
Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau
Marching Cross (5x)
Commemorative Cross 1923 in bronze Amsterdam Police
Commemorative Cross 1938 in gold Amsterdam Police
Police Swimming Proficiency Medal in silver Amsterdam Police
Commander in the Order of the German Eagle
Commander in the Order of Saint Sava of Serbia
Commander in the Order of the Crown of Rumania
Officer in the Order of Leopold II of Belgium
Officer of Instruction Publique of France
Decoration 2nd class of the German Red Cross
Decoration 2nd class of the Austrian Red Cross
But still a record holding police officer is:
Chief Commissioner A.H. Sirks of Rotterdam:
Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau
Commemorative Medal Honour Guard 1933
Bronze Table Medal for the Inauguration of Queen Wilhelmina, 1898
Commander in the Order of the Danebrog of Denmark
Commander in the Order of the Crown of Rumania
Commander in the Order of the Phoenix of Greece
Officer in the Order of the Crown of Belgium
Officer in the Order of the Sacred Treasure of Japan
Officer in the Order of the British Empire
Knight 1st class in the Order of Saint Olav of Norway
Knight 1st class in the Order of Wasa of Sweden
Knight in the Legion of Honour of France
Knight in the Order of the Crown of Italy
Officer d'Academy of France
Decoration 2nd class of the Austrian Red Cross
Medal 2nd class of the Prussian Red Cross
Medal 3rd class of the Prussian Red Cross

F.G.C.J. F?ndter de Beauch?ne was a police commissioner with the Amsterdam Police. He was awarded the following medals:
Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau
Commemorative Cross 1898 Amsterdam Police (1899)
Knight 4th class of the Order of the Red Eagle of Prussia
Officer in the Order of the Black Star of Benin
So you can strike him of the list.
To give another example of a senior police officers list of awards, hereby the list of awards to Chief Commissioner A.J. Marcusse, also of the Amsterdam Police:
Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion (1928)
Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau
Commemorative Cross 1898 Amsterdam Police (1899)
Commemorative Cross 1923 in gold Amsterdam Police (1924)
Commander in the Order of Isabel the Catholic of Spain
Officer in the Order of the Sacred Treasure of Japan
Knight 1st class of the Order of Wasa of Sweden
Knight 1st class of the Order of Saint Olav of Norway
Knight in the Legion of Honour of France
Knight in the Order of the Crown of Belgium
Decoration 2nd class of the German Red Cross
Decoration 2nd class with War Decoration of the Austrian Red Cross
Or, the awards to C. van Asperen, Inspector:
Officer in the Order of Orange-Nassau
Commemorative Cross 1898 Amsterdam Police (1899)
Knight in the Order of the Crown
Decoration 2nd class of the German Red Cross (1925)
Cross of Merit of the Hungarian Red Cross (1925)
And this are just senior officers of the Amsterdam Police, but looking at the newspapers from that time period a lot of other big city police officers received foreign decorations.

Sorry for not answering your question by e-mail, but I'm a bit behind on answering the e-mails through my website.
My first idea would be a police commissioner or chief commissioner. The Dutch police was a uniformed service and thus elegible for the Mobilisation Cross 1914-1918. In 1910 a French state visit took place and - although I'm not certain about the exact date - the King of Siam visited the Dutch Queen about 1913-1915.
The Order of Orange-Nassau was quite common to be awarded to senior ranking Dutch police officers.
Cheers,
Erik
I have a couple of comments
Timeframe:
The Thai Order of the Crown is the post-1946 design (as far as I can tell).
The Black Star of Benin is obviously pre-1963.
So the timeframe for the group is quite wide - at least a period from 1918 to 1946.
Recipient:
I don't know about the diplomat theory - wouldn't a diplomat have many more orders? Of course a diplomat could have received a lot of Commander's Crosses and Grand Crosses, but then we're back to just guessing.
I have a group belonging to a department manager and member of the board of 'Alliance Francaise'. He received the Black Star of Benin order (Commander) but wasn't connected to the diplomatic service at all.
Actually the recipients of the Black Star of Benin and the Thai Order of the Crown were all kinds of people (that is, the kind of people who would normally be eligible for a national knight cross...).

I would be very interested in the details of this Dutch recipient. Could you post them here or PM them to me?
Thanks,

for the end
Nice Guy! I would love to see that one 'live' at the end of the month!

Maybe literally, but in English, we would say "commemorative" for a badge or medal.
Yes,its betters.
Director of institute of development of external relations between Holland and foreignes
Thanks! It's quite a difficult language when you only have an online dictionary and a small traveller's dictionary! And to think that when I visited Talinn last year I could manage myself in English almost everywhere

Hi.Literally from estonian the m?lestusm?rk-means "memorable badge".
Thanks gents!
Another translation I need help with:
"Hollandi ja v?lismaade vaheliste suhete arendamise keskinstituudi dir"
The person in question was director of a steel manufacturing facility, but my dictionary doesn't give a translation for "keskinstituudi", nor do I get a handsom translation for the words in front of that.
I come as far as "Dutch ... foreign international (or chemistry) terms develep ... institute director".

Literally, j?rk means grade and aste means degree, so you might say "II. Grade, I. Degree," but that sounds a little awkward in English. Also, aste can also mean grade and j?rk can mean degree.
M?lestusm?rk does mean commemorative (badge).
Thanks Dave!

Hello,
I'm doing some research towards the Estonian Red Cross Order.
Somehow there were different versions.
I can understand the following:
Eesti Punase Risti teenetem?rk I klas = Estonian Res Cross Order 1st class
But what does this mean:
Eesti Punase Risti m?lestusm?rk II j?rgu I aste
Estonian Red Cross (Commemorative Badge?) II ??? Ist degree
Help would be appreciated.
With kind regards,
Erik M?ller

I have no idea, can't remember when a set like that was previously for sale. But I admit that the price might have been a bit too high for the Finnish collector market. Jani Tiainen's (of Finnmedals) collector guide for Finnish orders & medals will be published soon, maybe that will ease the situation a bit.
Pete
Is there a medal roll for the Order of the Freedom Cross?

And did you mention it to them???
Kind regards,
Jacky
There was only an old guard. Don't think he even knew English!

How did you see that Eric??
And did you mention it to them???
Kind regards,
Jacky

and one of the show cases with te belgian and Dutch OMD
Of the Dutch medals at least three were fakes: the Naarden Siege Medal 1814 (tin version of 1860), the Flying Cross (questionable) and the Crown for the Honourable Mention on the Expedition Cross (definitely not an official one!).

Done ! As per popular demand
Thanks
Now that I've seen it I definitely think its Belgian. No Dutchman would design such an ugly medal
Seriously, the grenade is Belgian style and the uniform on it is certainly not Dutch. I guess the VR stands for "Vrijwillige Rijkswacht" (Voluntary State Guard) or something like that.

I was allowed to take pictures (I payed for it at the enterance) but the problem whas that I toke the pictures by putting my lens ont the glass of the showcases , so I could take the pictures without flashlight to have no reflection, and that the guards didn't like.
So we played a little cat and mouse
ok... missed that paying-at-the-entrance-bit. Oh well, you still made some beautiful pictures and I'm glad I have them on my hard disk
Just hope SKF has an alternative for this waiting for us in October

Closer
Guy,
You had quite a nice close-up of this one. Could you please post it?
I visited the museum together with Guy and some other medal nut cases last year during the international meeting of phaleristic societies. We had quite a nice strawl through the museum. The only problem was that it was forbidden to take photographs inside, so we had to guard Guy off from the guards while he was taking pictures. How did you manage to get those pics Ed?

Not true: on occassion of the inauguration of H.M. Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands in 1980 the princes Willem-Alexander, Johan-Friso and Constantijn were all decorated with the Knight (1st class) of the House Order of the Golden Lion of Nassau. Also, and these names are not mentioned in the publication by C.P. Mulder and P.A. Christiaans, Prince Bernhard, Princess Juliana and Prince Clause were decorated with this Order.
In 2000 both Max van der Stoel and Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela received the award, signed by Queen Beatrix (and in the case of Mandela, contra-signed by H.R.H. the Grand Duke of Luxembourg). However, during the years, the Grand Duke has made several appointments without a Dutch contra-sign.
So Max van der Stoel was not the first one after Snijders to receive the order, nore was he the first Dutchman to be decorated as such since 1919.
