    1. So currently there are three different pieces with "authentic" ribbon known (excluding the one from Peterson)?

While the remaining pieces of 9,997 medals (according to Morton & Eden info) are "somewhere" - what do we know about the (quantity) of the ribbon? Were the medals stored at the Osaka mint together with the ribbon? Adjusted?...

An intersting topic with a lot of questionmark...

      BR, Chris

    2. Aha!

You gave me " ;) " hidden inside the quote of my own post!

Don't worry - just like to show you, that I'm hanging on your every word - :rock on:

I love reading your posts and even more, seeing your photos!!!

I wish, I could pay back somehow... :anmatcat:

Too bad, that the current owner of this Numismatic Society medal didn't show up here yet...:D

      Chris

    3. No! That's not true!

Check the symbol below your post "American Numismatic Society ..." and you'll see "something different" ;)

I wasn't able to use "MultiQuote" correct - I'm here at a different place and my PC is too old and have some problems here...

      Sorry for that!

PS: Sundays are always my lazy day! :jumping:

    4. Honestly, gents!

I heard by rumor about one origin medal with an AUTHENTIC ribbon! Never saw it, but the source is absolute reliable!

Nick, you know, who I'm taking about, right?

I'm just curious, if there are any further authentic ribbons? I guess, these ribbons looks the same, but have a different "haptic" feeling?

    5. Let`s all sing together

      指切りげんまん、

      yubi kiri genman

      うそ ついたら

      uso tsuitara

      針 千本 飲ます

      hari sen bon nomasu

      指切った

      yubi kitta

      yubi - finger

切り kiri - cut, a cut

      げんまん gen man

うそ uso - lie, a lie

うそ ついたら uso tsuitara – If tell a lie

      hari - needle, pin

針千本 hari sen bon – 1000 needles. [the 本 is used to count needles - a thousand 千 to be precise]

飲ます nomasu - give a drink, cause to drink [same as 飲ませる]

指切った yubi kitta – finger cut

      I am impressed!

    6. Thanks for the translation Nick. ;)

Pity that there are not more detailed images of the ring, side views, etc.

Possibly,a private commission to a jeweler in Yokohama by a Thor crewman and maybe the same person/s who made the HK awards ??

Just speculation on my part, who knows ?

      Many thanks,Martin.

…or just only an item, which was made privately onboard the Thor, using any estranges materials?

Seriously, I still have doubts that every (any?) items are manufactured by any Japanese jeweler. There are enough items, who were handicraft by the sailors itself, e.g. while during on the sea (Iron Cross, etc.) or any other reason.

Especially for this unique items, there will be almost no 100% proof able comments about the manufacture or date, authenticity of fake, etc.

      Just my two cents.

      BR, Chris

    7. I'd guesstimate that only 50% of the museums holdings are on display at any given moment. We have an amazing collection of Japanese art & in equally astounding collection of Japanese weapons in our Arms & Armor section. If anyone wants to come for a visit & a tour PM me

Thanks, Jareth! I'd like to pay a visit, but don't know, when I'll be in the US...

    8. Oh, I see. You used the supplemental volume. I don't have that--looks like it may have some more good info.

My mistake! I should have tell everybody about this supplement volume. I forgot to translate the most elementarily kanji: 資料編

      Sorry for that!

    9. Chris, do you have the page number right? My copy of the same book has nothing about that medal. In fact, page 379 is about the post-war Mint.

      Checked again, source said:

      “[…]製造数は金18個、銀2,251.“

      Source: 大蔵省造幣局編 『造幣局百年史(資料編)』 大蔵省造幣局、昭和49315, p. 379.
