Very interesting and impressive documents to a true frontline soldier, thanks for showing! He (most probably) got the Prussian War Service Cross for his service with a domestic reconnaissance / civil affairs unit. He was in touch with different civil authorities, political parties etc. and was highly regarded because of his excellent work (writing position papers etc).

    2. Thanks for showing the other pages! A short summary: Recalled for WWI on 03.08.1914, woundet on 22.08.14, promoted to Gefreiter on 24.09.1915, got the Eisernes Kreuz II. Klasse on 21.05.1916, became an english POW on 04.11.1918, returned to Germany on 04.09.1919 and was promoted to Unteroffizier and release from service.

    3. I have an extensive set of the Machine Gunner sharpshooter magazines from 1917-18.... most have the design of the skeleton reching out from the machine gun..... some have EK1 and higher awards listed... in this one Karl Zur Lage....

      Chris,

I have a WWII Wehrpaß to a Leutnant d.R. Nikolaus Spanier who served with Maschinengewehr-Scharfschützen-Abteilung 69 from March 17 to Feb. 18 and was awarded the EK I on the 5th of July 1917. Could you maybe check, if he is mentioned in the magazine?

(I will post his Wehrpaß on the next weekend.)

    4. Johannes Günther was born 11.01.1907 and was a bricklayer by profession, he was called up for service on 19.06.1941. He served with the following units:

      19.06.1941: 2./ Landes– Schützen–Ersatz–Bataillon 9

      08.08.1941: 4./ Feldgendarmerie–Ersatz–Abteilung 3

      16.08.1941: Genesenden–Kompanie Landes–Schützen –Ersatz–Bataillon 9

      22.08.1941: 1./ Landes–Schützen–Bataillon 638

      21.02.1942: Genesenden–Kompanie Landes–Schützen–Ersatz–Bataillon 9

      27.02.1943: Heeresentlassungsstelle 2/IX

      30.04.1943: released from service

Unfortunately I don´t know why he served with a military police unit for one week. He was trained with the Gewehr 98, the czech counterpart Gewehr 24(t) and the czech light machine gun MG-26(t). From 22.08.1941 on he took part in the russian campaign. He was severely wounded on 20.02.1942, he was shot trough his perineum and testicles. He was released from service on 30.04.1943 because of this wound. He was awarded the following medals:

      31.03.1942: Verwundetenabzeichen in Schwarz 1939

      21.05.1942: Verwundetenabzeichen in Silber 1939

20.08.1942: Medaille Winterschlacht im Osten (Ostmedaille)

26.11.1942: Eisernes Kreuz II. Klasse 1939
