    1. UB6365 is refering to GRU or Glavnoye Razvedyvatel'noye Upravleniye or the Military Intelligence Directorate of the Soviet Army.

You are probably right about secrets flowing out of there sometimes!! :cheeky:

But its another building and the secrets are of a different nature...they are more accessible than GRU secrets!!!

Remember that the answer is in three parts

      1) What is the place?

      2) Where is it located?

      3) What is the nature of the secrets that I refer to?

      Jim

    2. Still exhausted from the previous one....!!! However, seeing the participation that there was on the quiz this evening I want to keep things going.

      Question 60

This is a photo I snapped on my cell phone a few years ago.

This is one of a complex of (rather nondescript) buildings that is well guarded and access to it is restricted to most. Had I not known what it was, (and that is why I was there) I might have simply passed it by.

And yet it houses some well kept secrets which seem to flow out from time to time.

What is the place? .....Where is it located?....... What is the nature of the secrets that I refer to?

      Good luck!!!

      Jim

    3. Gunner 1 may have a bit of a point as most of Lithuania was annexed to the Russian empire at the time. That distinction went over my head.

However UB6535 also has very much of a point. You will probably find that on his internal documents Smuskevich may very well had "Jew" as his NATIONALITY . It was that way even in the post-war Soviet Union. Politically incorrect by today's standards but a fact of the Soviet Union!

      Jim

    4. Yep crossed posts!!!

I'll wait for UB6365 to confirm the victory......

I had him yesterday but for some reason I did not consider him! Mention of the double HSU brought him to mind straight away and the numbers suddenly made sense.

This was indeed a challenge and if my answer was correct, UB6365 does indeed deserve to be congratulated for the subject he chose!!!

      Jim

    5. Awarded HSU 29 in 1937 and HSU 5 in 1939!!!

Khalkin Gol and Zhukov was the right link indeed!!!

      From wiki stub:

Yakov Vladimirovich Smushkevich (Russian: Яков Владимирович Смушкевич; April 14, 1902 – October 28, 1941[1]) was Commander of the Soviet Air Force.

He participated in the Spanish Civil War where he was known as "General Duglas" for which he received the Hero of the Soviet Union.[2] He was in charge of aviation for the 1st Army Corps at the Battle of Khalkhin Gol, receiving Hero of the Soviet Union. He was the commander of Soviet Air Force from 1939 to 1940. He was arrested on June 8, 1941[3] and executed on personal order of Lavrentiy Beria on October 28, 1941.

    6. I would say that our man died in the 1941 purge....carried the rank of lieutenant general. There's a few names there. A handful actually.

I just cannot research them as my browser keeps crashing!!!! Already re-installed it today to no avail!!!

Initially I thought he was recipient 1 of an order awarded circa 5,000 times and of another awarded 57,000 times - I've got a feeling I too was on a wild goose chase there..... the reference is probably to a group of men and not recipients of an order .......

His boss received the order of Victory - perhaps Zhukov.....perhaps he was in the Battle of Khalkin Gol

And the bounty on his head....intriguing!!!!

There are enough hints and we're probably just looking for our man from the wrong angle.....

      :banger: indeed!!!

      Jim

    7. As the reason for this quiz is educational as much as a way of enjoying ourselves - it is encouraged that questions require more than just a name but where possible, they ask about specific events or reasons why a person may be famous. This ensures that answers are at worst reasoned guesses which teach us all something new.

Please keep this in mind for the next questions.....

Frank, I was wondering how long it would take you to figure out that "I am from Mongolia" was not a hint. That was a real wild goose chase.... :cheeky:

      Jim

    8. Scoreboard update!!! Congratulations UB6365 on your first victory! You are placed under Tachel whose previous question also scored him his first victory point. Welcome aboard to you both.

      18 points - JimZ

      15 points - Harvey

      10 points - Hauptmann

      5 points - Gunner 1

      4 points - Christophe

      3 points - Valter

      2 points - kapten_windu

      1 point - Tachel

      1 point - UB6365

As Tachel has confirmed a win, the honour of asking the question 59 goes to UB6365!!

      Jim

    9. Quiz flew past as I looked away - so the scores are presently as follows:

      Scoreboard update!!!

      18 points - JimZ

      15 points - Harvey

      10 points - Hauptmann

      5 points - Gunner 1

      4 points - Christophe

      3 points - Valter

      2 points - kapten_windu

      1 point - Tachel

Thanks to Hauptmann for covering question 57 for Harvey. With Tachel having given a correct reply, his question 58 is presently unanswered (or is it....?)

Harvey is of course back in the game after sitting out Question 57.

As a general rule - I remind you to wait for the person asking the question to confirm your point or otherwise before moving on to the next question. I know we are eager to keep things moving but a point can only be awarded by the person asking the question (unless he suddenly goes MIA!!!!)

Regards to all and back to Tachel's question......

      Jim

    10. No-one said it'd be easy. However I have found the people who run certain sites to be very helpful from time to time. I also think that you will find low res scans on websites when they at times have much better quality scans on their hard drives!

If there is anyone else who can help Frank out in anyway whatsoever, I am sure he'll be most appreciative.

      Jim

    11. Merci - I would have not got anywhere close to him if it had not been your hint. I was honestly clueless as to where to start searching!!!

I know him from his role in Sex and the City  .... But I never bothered to look him up and never came across him. I managed to get to Jessica Lange and then, I saw a Russian name.......the rest was just one click away.

      Jim
