I am the Palace of the Republic, built on the site of the Berli Statdtschloss..... construction finished in 1976 only to find, in 1990, that the building contained asbestos. The building was demolished with the steel being sold for use in the Dubai Burj Khalifa.

Hi Gunner 1,
You are of course free to stop participating in the Soviet Quiz at any time. However do understand that I cannot accomodate requests from any member to remove their scores as this is a cumulative effort and yours has been a very valid contribution to the success of the 2011 version of the quiz. The fact that you have decided to leave the quiz does not in any way diminish your participation. Neither does it diminish the fact that you have succeeded in answering several questions, some of which were rather challenging. Your score stands as an achievement to your credit.
The quiz scoreboard will be reset as of 1/1/2012 when the quiz will be locked and a new one will start from scratch. Only the names of 2012 participants will be included.
On a personal note, I am sorry to see you go. There have been a number of frustrating questions. However do bear in mind that the quiz includes, not only members from different countries, but also members whose first language is not English. It includes members who come from different backgrounds, cultures, levels of education etc. This basically means that the same question may be tackled by different members in just as many different ways. I have intervened a number of times on questions which I thought were too complex or too cryptic, taking myself out of the running of the quiz whenever I did so. However, I never felt there was any need to get involved with question that were answered within a day or two. Ultimately, there remains an element of poetic licence in most questions and the underlying hints.
Gunner, I will reiterate that your participation was highly valued and surely, appreciated by all who took on your challenge. I hope that this will turn out to be more of an "au revoir" than an "adieu" and may I remind you that we all remain one post away.
Regards,
Jim

We'll wait for UB to confirm (or otherwise) ...

Sounds like Leonid Brezhnev and the Order of Victory to me......
Conferred order on himself but posthumously revoked in 1989 for not having met the award criteria.

Hi Gunner - just to confirm Harvey's point that even though the answer may fit the question, it may not necessarily be the correct answer.
Keep it up guys! And keep those questions and answers coming!

Hi Harvey,
Welcome back - Long time no see! You are indeed correct....I hoped you liked my description of the Order of Friendship of Peoples, which I consider one of the most beautiful Soviet ODMs!
I think the RF variation leaves so much to be desired. With most of the new versions of the older Soviet ODMs, the desire to break away from the older design has washed all aestethic qualities down the tubes. In true nouveau riche fashion, the bling might be there but the taste is completely lacking. There I feel better!!!
The point is yours as is the next challenge.

Question 83
I look like I'm worth 70 diamonds but I'm not - I am more of a studded punk.
Considered pretty by many, I was dressed in white, blue, red, gold and green.
I met my untimely demise at the end of 1991 when I was only 19.
I was renamed, and with all that was beautifu battered out of me.....I was reborn three years later.
What can I say, life under the USSR was so much more radiant than under the Russian Federation, and now, I am but a shadow of myself.
What am I?
Attach my picture before my demise AND my picture after in a side by side comparison.
Regards,
Jim

Jim,
This was a good hard question... Except I had recently the opportunity to have a look at Henry Sakaida's excellent book : "Heroines of the Soviet Union", and I remembered her story... So, with the help of internet.. easy.. )
Now, for the 80th challenge, please, let me some time... Probably tomorrow...
Cheers.
