    1. Odulf is right in saying that they cannot be revived to "issue status" and very right in saying that "you will walk these shoes"

However, a significant difference can be noticed between leather that may crack upon the least bit of pressure before treatments as opposed to leather that becomes more pliable after treatment. Put the boots on and walk 20 metres in them and they'll probably fall to bits anyway!!!

Yes - the idea is to slop or at best, slow the process of decay!!

Bear in mind that there is salvagable leather and leather which has passed the point of no return!

      Jim

    2. Hey guys....well done on your effort. I've posted some more stuff and am hoping to see some more from you all!

Would like to get creative but I have chosen to stick a simple picture to showcase the orders!! They are really gorgeous after all!!

When I tune in to GMIC I am now seeing soviet stuff on the top of the page!!! Shows that we are still around!!

      Bring it on guys!!!

      Jim

    3. Comrade Jim, have heeded your call to arms! Have just submited a few and now with the deadline extended I hope to have time to do some more. Am on duty the next two days but will do my best. слава! победа! Follow us to glory and victory comrades! Dan

Excellent Dan. Yes...lets try to bring out the heavy guns and take them all the way to the panel.

As I said, I am not in it to win it......But I will be upset if nothing goes to the Soviet section!!!!!

Still a couple of weeks to go!!!

      Jim

    4. Jim

I've just looked at your pictures and I hate you. Not only are the awards just fantastic your photo taking skills are outstanding. Well done.

I notice the end date has been extended, it'll give me time to try to improve.

      Spaz

Thanks Spaz!! I appreciate the comment!

They are pics that I took ages ago and you are encouraging me to take more. I doubt that they they'll get more impressive than the OBK3 in terms of the actual awards but in terms of beauty, we've got the advantage - Soviet ODM'S are in my opinion the top models in the ODM world. Yes other countries also churn out the odd beauty but hey..... I have yet to see a soviet Order that does not turn heads!!

Will look forward to seeing your pictures.

      Jim

    5. Dear UB6535,

I felt like I was going to go in circles as soon as I read the question - specifically, the Order of the Garter which I consider to be largely the rich boys (royals) club is in principal, incompatable with the Soviet Union! But I thought I'd learn something new - perhaps one of the marshals of the USSR....contribution to science....that got me really scratching my head.

When I went over the list of the knights of the Order, I realised this was going to be even more tricky! And indeed it was!

Please refer to the rules on post 1. Specifically

"4. The trivia question must have a connection to the Soviet Union & former Eastern Block Countries, as it is the purpose of this Forum. The trivia could involve history, people, awards, badges or items. The trivia question needs to relate to a time-frame. For example, when was this award first established? Or When did East Germany come into existence? [PROPOSED ADDITION - THE QUESTION MUST HAVE A CLEAR ANSWER - A DATE, AN EVENT, A STORY - IT SHOULD NOT HAVE SEVERAL QUESTIONS BUT SHOULD ENCOURAGE ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND TO THE ANSWER. QUIZ HOSTS MAY REQUEST A MEMBER TO NARROW DOWN THE SCOPE OF THE "QUESTION IF TOO MUCH INFORMATION IS REQUESTED. QUESTIONS SHOULD ALSO NOT BE TOO OBSCURE AND SHOULD BE READILY RESEARCHABLE WITHOUT TOO MUCH DIFFICULTY]"

To this effect I suggest that this question is scrapped and that you ask another one within the confines of the Soviet Union. You have given us some very interesting challenges and I have no doubt you will continue to do so.

      Jim

    6. Hi UB6365,

I am baffled by this question although I am sure there is a logical explanation. I know that order of the Garter is the most exclusive club but there seem to be no "soviet" recipients. Of course there are a couple of royals hailing from Romania and Yugoslavia and I am not sure if the reply may lie in these others. However, if I had to give a name it would be Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich of Russia, recipient of all above and other awards....

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_II_of_Russia

What was his biggest contribution to science - beats me! I am not even sure I am looking at the right person. He also hardly qualifies as a soviet were it not for the fact that he was murdered in 1918.

Perhaps I'm on a wild goose chase.....

      Jim

    7. I'll be posting some pics of Soviet ODMS on the GMIC Photo Competition. Not that I'll get anywhere with them, but I think that the Soviet Section is not at all being well represented.

In terms of membership following the Soviet sections, we Ivans are supposed to be one of the larger groups.

And if I may say, we Ivans have some of the more impressive ODMs and groups among other things.

And yet, we are letting the Tommies, Krauts, Limeys, Froggies and Nips outshine us!!! We are conspicuos more b our absence then our presence!!

So come on dear Ivans, and lets show the rest of GMIC the beauty of the Soviet red storm!!! Stavai strana agromnaya!!!

      Jim

    8. To update the scores

      19 points - JimZ

Question 65 is next and it will belong to UB6365!

    9. Urine??!! :shame:

I understand Dubbin is more of a wax than a cream. I think any natural shoe products can be used to preserve and softhen leather. These take the forms of creams that are neutral in colour (not black or brown but usually a murky/transucent white) that can be applied straight to the leather. The creams will then be absorbed by the leather, moistening it and making it more pliable - it will not restore the leather to its former glory but may prevent it from cracking if bent slightly.

It effectively returns natural oils that would have dried up over the years. I had used such a cream several years ago on a pair of dispatch rider boots for which the leather had dried up becoming rather brittle in parts! It worked wonders - I do not remember the brand unfortunately but I am sure that any modern cream that is both natural and neutral will help and should not causing any damage! Once I applied the cream some three times, I then proceeded to polish them up a bit.

Not sure what you can apply to the steel studs given that they touch the leather soles.....I think that the leather will not take too nicely to any form of oil that can prevent/reduce rust and that may remain/become more of a problem if rust sets in.

      Hope that helps!

    10. Looking at this HSU in detail and finally having access to my sources I would comment as follows:

First - Serial number is possibly stamped too low down - typically the serial number is written within the top arm of the star. This means that if you had to draw a line at the base of the two sides of the top ray of the star, the serial number would typically fall in or at lowest, on this line. On this HSU, the serial number falls way below it.

Compare to similar one "6980" on http://www.collectrussia.com/DISPITEM.HTM?ITEM=25053

Second - given the positioning of the serial number it is convenient for this to be "669"7. Which means that all that was needed to stamp this number are the "6" and "7". Of course there probably existed a "6666" HSU and that would not be a reason to doubt it.

I do find little else to pass comment on based on the above quality of the pics but ask for other comments nonetheless.

    11. Please be aware that this HSU is up for sale again. Which probably means that there was some issue or other.

As doubt has been expressed on this medal, I would advise one and all to check things out well prior to bidding on it.

It would also be good if we may continue further discussion on this piece. Opinions are welcome.

    12. Yes - as long as the person asking the question confirms the point keep it going!!!

      I just report the scores!!!

      3 points - Valter

      3 points - UB6365

      2 points - kapten_windu

      1 point - Tachel

The next question ......is already under way..... !!! (see post 654)

      Jim

    13. Scoreboard update - Well done Christophe for a correct and lightening fast reply!!!

      19 points - JimZ

And on to the next challenge of Question 62......Christophe - if and when you please..... !!!

      Jim

    14. Easy one...

      I am a legend.

I was born in Kharkov. My father was Hero of Socialist Labor.

All my brothers participated in WW2.

You can see my monuments in Moscow, Berlin and Ulaanbaatar.

But I have other relatives in other countries, China and North Korea. Some of them are still alive.

Hi Ub6365 - what is the question?

      Jim

    15. UB 6535 gave more than the answer that was requested..... He actually gave us the address!!!

Indeed these are part of the central archives of the ministry of Defence located in Podolsk, just South of Moscow.

For any of you who has researched a Soviet ODM, you must know that the documents received are stored somewhere in Russia.....Well this is part of the complex!!

There is indeed a whole subforum dedicated to researched documents. If you have any such research please post there.

Yes - Christophe. I indeed posted "Yes" to the Eastern part of Russia and edited it soon after as I realised that had overlooked East Russia. In my editing I also expanded on my comments not to keep them too dry.

      Well done UB6365!!!!

    16. TacHel's none of your replies are correct.

UB6535 is however on the right track showing us how the game should be played.

      - it's somewhere in Russia or former SU (blue post box) - YES - very much so... Russia

      - somewhere in Eastern part of Russia (plz mark Toyota RAV4 with right hand drive) - see above.

      - something related to defense (entry point style) - YES - I'd say it does

      - research or analytic facility, but not regular military unit (8 story building) - YES - this is not a regular military building

The secrets in this place are accessible to anyone who knows how to get to them....

      Jim
