    1. Hmmm why no war medal?

Because he joined 322 squadron 20th of March 1945 and was shot down on April 1st. Two weeks later he was liberated in a Kriegslazeret.

He escaped holland by bike in 1941. Through Belgium, France (spend some time in jail) to spain. With a boot to Aruba. From Aruba to New York, Canada, England. Back to Canada for training, Back to the UK, To Holland and Crashed in 1945...

    2. Here's the set of another friend. A Dutch Spitfire Pilot with 322 squadron. Only three living in Holland at this time...

And the Belgium awards are for Night combat/patrol in Antwerp. (Killing germans in close range with stengun and handgranates)

    5. The IMHO is not only for people who helped Jews in World War 2 but for other persecuted groups as well, by the nature of the beast the vast majority of the awards will be to be people who helped Jewish victims. I feel however that there are alternative ways of recognizing these brave people, who should have been recognised many years previously.

      Paul

      Like I said:

Wasn't the Kings medal for courage/service in the cause of freedom used for people who helped Jews, Pows and aircrews?

      or it this award "closed"?

    6. From the following government website:

      http://www.communiti...rporate/1499842

This is evidently not a wearable medal, nor instituted by The Queen. Gordon Brown is quoted as saying that he "was pleased to create a new award".

"1. The award - British Hero of the Holocaust - is a special award akin to a state honour. The solid silver medallion is 50mm wide and in a black leather presentation box. The obverse is inscribed - 'in the service of humanity' and the reverse - 'in recognition of xxxx whose selfless actions preserved life in the face of persecution'.

      2. The award was announced following a campaign by the Holocaust Education Trust and supported by Russell Brown MP EDM 1175. It called for Holocaust heroes to be awarded MBEs and OBEs posthumously."

Wasn't the Kings medal for courage/service in the cause of freedom used for people who helped Jews, Pows and aircrews?

    7. I have a commander's badge (III Class) of the Order of the Star, but I don't have just a photo or scan of the medal by itself. <img src="http://gmic.co.uk/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/blush.gif" style="vertical-align:middle" emoid="" border="0" alt="blush.gif" />

      Was thisone awarded to you?

    8. Did get a good medal, now for the archives...

After some laziness i called the local French embassy and they (i.e. a very charming and helpful english speaking french lady!) promptly provided me with the contact details of the SECRETARIAT D'ETAT AUX ANCIENS COMBATTANTS. Will be sending off a letter in coming days. Fingers crossed to see if something can surface!

Would you like me to get you in contact with the military Attaché to the Netherlands? I also can get you in contact with the two leading experts on decorations and medals to dutchmen.... PM me!

    9. An old veteran friend of mine is an ex RNAF Spitfire pilot.

Great story, he escaped Nazi occupied Holland by bicycle to Belgium, went by train to Paris, arrested somewhere in Vichy France. Got out of jail and escaped to Switzerland. Traveled again by train through France and got on a ship in Portugal. The ship took him after a stop in Venezuela to the Netherlands Antilles. He stayed there for a while and went on to New York. From New York he boarded again a ship, this time to England. In London he joined the Dutch Army and was sent to Canada for Flight training! To cut a long story short. In 1944 he was shot down in his spitfire above Holland and became a POW. Liberated in 1945 and send back to England to recover.

There he met a Johnny Coller. He remembers that Johnny had a DSO DFC and MiD. Does anyone have more information about Johnny?
