Nice info indeed.
I am having two of these researched. I hopethe investment is worth it :-)
Its allways worth the invested money, Chris. Except maybe British and Commonwealth Medals, you don?t get this much info for any of the orders/medals of other states like Third Reich or French or Romanian or whatever...
Its allways exiting to learn the story, whatever it is, at least for me... I know, you think similar....
Let us know, what the results were
Paul, nice Glory and great research

Thanks for the kind words, Auke. I have to update the photo with the OPW?s, as i have a few more now. I am also completely addicted to soviet screwbacks, especially the OPW?s, both classes, even the 85 issue?s are nice in mint condition. Like you say, just beautiful.
Thanks again!

Dear Gerd,
a truely interesting photograph .
The HSU-Colonel at the left seems to have been an active pilot - fighter pilot ? -, who started his career as a sub-lieutenant (his Glory 3cl) and retired as a colonel somewhere in the 1960s. His Merit-Medal, RS & RB #2 might be long service awards for 10, 15 & 20 years in service. It should be not so difficult to find out his identity .
The "Cavalier" at the right received also a Motherland 3cl (!), which is a rather rare award for GPW-NCOs. Due to his awards, it seems, that he did not promote to an officers rank. I have never read about an NCO, who got a Motherland .
Best regards
Christian
Thanks, Christian.
I might add, the Cavalier on the right has the Border-Guards Medal on his ribbonbar, so he had service in the BG and that may explain his Motherland 3rd class.
To all:
I agree with Ed and Wild Card
best,
Gerd

ooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhh
You must adopt me!!!! This bar has made my day. Now, why was the Red Eagle legitimately placed on a Lifesaving Ribbon? Was this automatic for a second award?
Paul
Paul, yes, it was possible to award the Red Eagle Order and if i remember correctly, also the Crown-Order on the Lifesaving-ribbon for a second award.
Awesome bar and extremly rare.

Hi Humberto,
i will keep my eyes open for a document for you. I am sure, with a little patience one of those will pop up somewhere.
all the best,

I was wondering about the backwards order of the medals?!!
Doc
It?s a Frackspange, Doc, they are mounted "backwards". It was worn beside the collar on a civilian Frack.

Paul,
try this website and click on orders database:
http://www.soviet-screwbacks.com/
There you can add your single orders and medals and also the one, you are looking for. They had two matches already.
And there are also collectors our there, who add the data here to their databases and it can happen, that they see an order or medal, which belongs to a group or other single awards, posted on this forum or elsewhere on the internet. I know, because it just happened to me and i am in negotiations to reunite two orders. Cross your fingers everyone.

Humberto,
you should check german ebay (www.ebay.de) for a SAM document.
Here is the Militaria-Section to save you some time searching:
http://sammeln.listings.ebay.de/Militaria_...ListingItemList
You should be able to find one there. If you need help with the purchase, just send me a pm.
all the best,
Gerd

Andrew,
thanks a lot for posting the photos of your Grandfather. Extremly nice pictures. Do you have anything of his uniforms or the ribbonbar, he wears in the later photo?
Take a look at this research, which Dave posted a while ago.

Very interesting. Thanks, Nack. I didn?t know, Border Guards did use these shoulderboards too. I only have the East German "Milit?rlexikon" for this kind of information, but its obviously incomplete.

Branch is Navy, Rank is Matros (Private). No idea, what the "ПВ" stands for... Its not connected to a Fleet, i think.

The optimal price range for an OOR is 15-20 Dollar, but only, when i want to buy one
Kidding aside, Alexei sells the 4-rivet version for 310 Dollar, the 5-rivet version for 275 Dollar. I think, thats quite close to market value.
Hope, this helps...
all the best,
Gerd

Dan you have a really nice collection now
The lesson on the MMM, you got from me lately, was: "NEVER EVER leave any stuff laying around, when Kid?s are close" But who could have been mad about him, his intentions were good and he really did a good job polishing that Medal, i have to admit it. No worries, it will develop some patina again with the time...
I miss my Homeland At least its in good hands
Great stuff, mate

You're right about that, however there was no Stalingrad Front at that time. The Stalingrad Front was disbanded 31-12-1942.
Auke its not unusual that in these documents is refered to with the old names of the Fronts.
best,
Gerd

Right, Jim! And turmning those stones over is such fun.
I couldn?t agree more with you both. Actually the story behind these awards is as exiting as the beautiful piece of artwork, its related to, sometimes even more than that.
