A XIXth century very famous french illustrator, Gustave Doré, has sketched this typical policeman lantern. The sketch is called "the bull's eye" and it appears in a 1872's book : "London, a pilgrimage" ( available at this link :http://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k10470488/f15.image.r=.langFR ).
