I've heard stories-notably of a distant distaff family member who got shot by the French on November 12th because the news of the armistice hadn't seeped through. I've never noted specifics though. I think Lynn McDonald has details on incidents post Armistace.

There's a link in the thread above.

Depends. Those are very nice bars and while I don't know much about construction techniques, look ok to me. I'd throw @$250-$350 each of them minimum if you're selling. They both look like NCOs bars to me given the lower classes of the orders.

Look in that window.

I never knew the Republic gave "grenades of Honor" ( shako plates) as bravery awards.

My US defense/legion medal bar above was only for a members' medal. If Maine had issued Guard medals he'd have rated one of those, but alas, no.

I believe it's a Napoleonic veterans' officers' association badge. If you look at the recent Prince of Monacos' Napoleonic medal sale catalogue ( on line) there are a number of these shown. What are the medals' silver marks? Pre Second Empire badges are VERY Collectables (valuable).

Cool medal Speagle. All (almost) the US Legion medals ( inc. many convention medals) use the same ribbon. I saw a rather rare Legion bond drive medal on eBay last week. I don't suppose you got that one?
Here is the local Legion Commander @ 1940 . It's a hand colored photo, so the clerk got the colours a bit off, but you can see the officers' medal in wear. Note he's also wearing a VFW. Medal as well as his WW1 gong.

I got this over the summer. They used to take your picture with your date and then you could buy it as a souvenir/proof: "really guys, she was a hot-to-trot blond nurse and an officer to boot!" .
Besides the fact that the sailor is out with an officer, which didn't happen often, do you notice anything unusual about him?
Sorry, I'm using an iPad, so the pictures not as sharp as I'd like.

Me too...although a sitting duck loves a good photo op. Operation Empty Chair-that cracks me up.

Hear, hear.
The Air Force boards are aflame about this medal. Guys who spent a lot of time in dangerous and remote locations got nothing, because they did it during the Cold War.

Not eligible for Major? I know majors who teach at West Point. How's that work? Is instructor a dead end assignment?

Outstanding! do I recognize the Masters' handwriting in the first picture?

Hmmmmmmm....I think you are correct. Of course, if ISIS invades Turkey, all bets are off.

There are a number of articles on this topic. there were NO Prussian regular officers in the army before 1914. There were Jewish officers in the Bavarian army.

Jeepers. The only one he was missing was the Hansas and Oldenburg.

This is a little off topic, but this is a local Quebec ale. It's outstanding. It's brewed in commemoration of the old Royalist regiment that held Quebec for France.
