I see. It makes dating 4th and 5th classes rather difficult. And given that the silver kanji only really dates the box, one needs to be sure that the box and the medal are an original pair. Thanks for shedding light on the matter.

Thanks Nick, It looks like the main difference is the three short rays were shortened in the later version. Did this hold true for all classes? Barry
