Hi John,
Interesting.... You were looking at the tail feathers, I was looking at the cut-out left wing tips!
Rosenberg,
Please don't keep us in suspense!
Regards,
Mark
I echo that.Going on the tail feathers, I'd say...GWL.

Hardy,
Luft GAB Cases are scarce to find, but not rare. I would think that the going price may be 400-500 Euros or so. But I, too, have my doubts as to whether this case is original!
Let the case experts come forward!

Mark

It looks FLL to me. I'd like more close-ups too. Especially of the rear hardware setup. Nice cased award!

Gordon,
You convinced me long ago of the Juncker connection. I posted this one many Forums ago, and still believe it supports the theory. The hinge and pins on the UBOOT match both Juncker EK Clasps, one marked L/12.

Mark
Nice collection of Mr. Saez, as always.

Hi My Friend,
How about posting (maybe I missed it already) the Spanish Pilot and Pilot Observer Wings. You KNOW that is one of my favorites of yours!
Best Regards

Eric,
That RO/AG is killing me. It's the only GWL I'm missing. And didn't we forget something?

F,
I love the DLV, hiding beneath the 1st Model. Looks like both early blades used the same dunkelblau leder on the scabbard. And what an incredible etui for the AL MERITO EN CAMPANA.

Your math is off: Don't you mean 28mm?

Funny that they didn't restrike the zinker sooner. It wasn't like they had to remake the Die! If they would have, lots of the Aluminium badges we collect might not have so many repaired catches and modified hinges.
I really like the reverse of this '43. A textbook (I know we hate that word!!!) example of 'bubbling' beneath the finish.
Mark
That 43/44 badge is in nice condition, which attests to the quality of C E Juncker badges in general. Even though the finish is duller than that of the aluminium badges, although the eagles appear to have been frosted, the crispness of the strikings is evident.PK

Stan,
I agree with Prosper. The finish on your example is not what the Juncker should look like. I am posting the 2b (with the thick wreath) side-by-side with a '43 zinker. As is readilly apparent, the strike is the same. Only one die existed. No 'variants' exist with this badge.

Mark

My Good Friend Francois (ie - Frenchie),
WE have come to know each other's collections and lives over the internet and the forums. Your abilities and talents in this Hobby are outstanding. The time you have spent writing articles to educate others is but pure dedication. You take the Hobby seriously, but do so with a very simplistic method.
The proof is documented in viewing, and by marvelling at your collection. And what you have posted for us to view is but a mere scratch of the surface of your endeavours.
Just Outstanding!

Steve, The pin IS magnetic. What I see most is the breakdown of a (silver colored) finish, maybe plating on the pin, yeilding to a dark-color base-metal beneath. Iron? Affected areas range in size from a speck to a 3 to 4 mm streak.
Eric, Excellent points you make. But, since put together from two different badges, incredible how exact the zinc color of both pieces is.
More Questions..... if this is a repro, how in the heck, technically speaking, did they manage to get the size correct, if they cast from real components. It's hard to believe a faker would invest the time to make a badge so close to spec, then jamb the 'wrong' rivet in the middle of the reverse? Who friggin knows! And would he have then had to 'use up' two badges to make our L/64HYBRID. Sounds like the name of a car!
I gotta put some Hefeweizen Bier in the fridge. It is starting to snow and the girlfriend has the weekend off.
I'll check back...... when I'm not busy with other matters.........

Mark

Jeff,
Thanks for the reply. Exactly the caliber of response I was hoping I might find. I'm off to bed now, too. 0400 rolls around pretty quickly. And they are even calling for snow in DC tomorrow! Maybe I should call in sick!

joetauchretter,
What makes the badge posted a "crude cast copy", to use your words. It may or may not be a repro, but a crude cast copy, no. The specs match exactly my Tombak Assmann Pilot. Maybe it is a crude cast copy too. I am looking for detailed specific comments, not shooting from the hip. If it is (crudely) cast, how did they get the dimensions correct? And where are the typical telltale signs of 'pockmarks' in the metal? Just answer those two questions, please.
Regards,
Mark
Here is what I measured tonight:
L/64 Pilot in Zink:
Weight - 25,00 grams
Height - 53,77 mm
Width - 42,22 mm
Wingtips - 66,33 mm
'A' marked Tombak Pilot:
Weight - insignificant
Height - 53,83 mm
Width - 42,43 mm
Wingtips - 66,72 mm

AHHHH. John wins the mega million lottery! I still cannot believe that the wing tips are GWL. I checked all my ref files and have never seen GWL 'cut' wing tips. They are all solid.
Has anyone any other images of that style? Rosenberg, how about a wing tip close up?

Mark
