Yes, you're right, he got two Suvorovs 2nd Class. But he DID receive the Friendship of Peoples, according to Warheroes.ru and, once again, Wikipedia...

Baidukov became a Colonel-General of Aviation in 1961. He was, according to both sites, the 'Kavaler naibolshego kolichestva ordenov SSSR' or 'Cavalier of the largest quantity of orders of the USSR'.
Carol I can ask the next question, he answered the most difficult part of the question.

I've checked all the pre-war, wartime and most post-war marshals - all had less than 20 Soviet orders. Perhaps another famous designer or so? I will keep looking!

The enamel was always enamel (or goofy paint under plastic) never cloth, the post-1961 was cloth.
Thanks, I didn't know the cloth-version was post-1961.
I keep learning here every day

I think that's him! A beautiful ribbon!
Edit: Who has seen cloth-versions of this one?

I've seen that olive green - yellow - olive green ribbon of the Polar Star many times:
But there seems to be a pre-1961 ribbon for the Polar Star with the colors yellow - blue - yellow - red - yellow - blue - yellow. Has anyone ever seen pictures of it?

Of course you were both right. Christophe was first and had two correct answers, but Christian had Chuikov, which was the name I was looking for. Let's give Christophe the honor to post the next question. (EDIT: What he already did while I was typing )
And yes, Rodina Mat is a truly magnificent creation, well worth a jubilee question in this topic

This shouldn't be such a difficult question, so we will probably stay below 1000 replies in this thread.
We probably all recognise this medal. But which statue is depicted on it?
I want to know:
1. The name of the statue (Russian and English)
2. Where it is
3. A famous person who was involved in designing it
Good luck!

The only thing I can't translate is the Lenin quote on top of the document...

It is a certificate stating that Ishtvan Sholloi is rewarded for active participation with the preparation and demonstration of the Hungarian kitchen for family members of Soviet soldiers...

Quite a bulk of military power the Soviets had to tackle with .
Dear Christian,
Well, the Soviets didn't have to encounter this entire force. The first stage of the offensive was directed against the two Romanian army's. The 6th Army was busy in Stalingrad, the Italians were attacked in a later stage, and only parts of the 4th Panzer Army were in the Stalingrad area. Besides that, the Soviets deployed about 11 army's in the entire operation.
The Soviets underestimated the strength of the Axis-forces completly, but Vasilevsky's planning was perfect and they had simply good luck . It was also good luck for the Red Army, that STAVKA handed over (the more important) "Mars" to Zhukov (who made a total mess out of the operation ) and (not so important) "Uranus" to Vasilevsky. If the Soviets would have had the same success with "Mars" as with "Uranus", then the Axis-forces might have got in real trouble in winter 1942/43 at the Eastern Front.Uranus was thought out by both Zhukov and Vasilevsky. Once the operation started, Zhukov oversaw the encirclement with Vasilevsky as overall commander, but spent most of his time in directing the operations near Rzhev. By January, Zhukov was sent to Leningrad. So, while Vasilevsky was the one who more or less turned the Battle of Stalingrad into a victory, Zhukov wasn't so succesful. Still, he was promoted Marshal of the Soviet Union on January 18, 1943. This wasn't fair as Vasilevsky had been more succesful, so Vasilevsky was also promoted Marshal of the Soviet Union, on February 16, 1943.

BTW: 3 Romanian Armies (!) had been involved - as Axis-forces - in "Uranus".
Actually it were two Romanian Army's, the 3rd and the 4th, and, more or less, the Italian 8th Army.

I found another picture in my files of that flag of the 150th Order of Kutuzov 2nd Class Idritsk Rifle Division...

Chief of Staff of the regiment, if I'm not mistaking?

I think his name is Yevgeny Ilyich Tyukhtin, signed by Guards Lieutenant-Colonel Lazarenko on April 10 1953... Nice pictures by the way, but no Red Banner on the last officer!

Major? That's a Guards Lieutenant-Colonel (Pavel Aleksandrovich Lapin)...

Indeed Ed. Just look at the catalogues of Dietrich Herfurth, where all the 'original Mongolian names' are actually translated Russian names...
It will be great to have these names confirmed by the expert(s)!

There are a lot of small errors and typo's in that last PDF. I think this should be the correct names, transliterations and translations of the top Mongolian Orders and medals. The Hero Stars are difficult.

I don't have many 5 sided ribbons
but none of mine have metal suspensions
are these things is use before ww2?
Before and during WWII there were only brass and steel five-sided suspensions. The aluminium suspensions appeared somewhere in second half of the 40's.

Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin
in Russia: Soviet Orders, Medals & Decorations
Posted
Hello Gentlemen,
I'm looking for the names of the Soviet medals Gagarin received. I've read that he received five Soviet medals, and from pictures I could identify the Virgin Lands Medal and the 40 Years of Armed Forces Medal. Who can give me the names of the three others? Thanks.
