Initially the DoD stated that the ICM would not be issued, but that troops involved would get the GWOT as part of OEF (not sure how that worked, but never mind), now the DoD is pulling away from the GWOT idea? Does this mean a new medal will be awarded?

Can anyone explain to me why the US are still yet to name their mission for operation in Iraq/Syria? Has this ever happened before? I had always assumed that a computer programme churned out mission names at will?

Could it not be argued that the GWOT never really ended considering Afghanistan is still ongoing. I agree with you regards the ICM. They appear set on the GWOT medal at the current time, interesting that they didn't us the AFESM. I feel that if the campaign becomes bigger or more protracted a new medal will be issued. Perhaps they might put more emphasis on the Iraq Commitment Medal? The British are yet to make any mention of metallic recognition from what I can see.

Fair and scary point there M!! I feel that it's only a matter of time, before ground troops are deployed wholesale by the US and perhaps UK and other coalition belligerents. If this should happen then I'm in no doubt a new medal will be awarded. Hasn't there already been a GSM with bar Kurdistan? Maybe an OSM clasp Iraq or perhaps Northern Iraq Southern Syria?

Can anyone tell me what medal(s) the US issued for service covering Iraq between 1991 and 2003? Other than the Southwest Asia Service Medal and the GWOT (exp).

I wonder given current developments in Iraq whether this will add more power to the consideration of this medal, perhaps they'll even increase the qualification dates to include 2014 and beyond......

From what I've read it appears that the US will be awarding the GWOT to their troops for involvement in the current Iraq conflict. I wonder has any consideration been given by the UK as to what if any medal will be awarded to UK troops. The US has declined to reintroduce their Iraq campaign medal, assuming the UK does the same. I wonder whether the GSM Air Ops will be brought back or perhaps an OSM? I further assume that this campaign won't merit a war medal like the two previous wars have but more likely the OSM along the same lines as Afghanistan did? Has anyone else got any thoughts on this?

Hi Guys, Has anyone heard of this? British mountaineer Kenton Cool has completed his mission to take an Olympic gold medal to the top of Mount Everest. The medal was awarded to the 1922 British Everest expedition, who promised it'd be taken to the summit. But the climbers never reached the top because there was a huge avalanche. So Kenton decided to honour the vow. He said: "This promise needed keeping and after 90 years the pledge has been honoured for Britain." "To stand on the summit for the 10th time is simply amazing," Kenton added. "To have with me an Olympic gold medal awarded to the 1922 team is humbling." Am I right in thinking that the 1922 team where issued Gold Medals for mountain climbing, (I didn`t know there was such a thing in the Olympics), even though they didn`t make it to the summit? I`ve sort advice on this from an old Royal Navy mate, it appears that all medals are just named Royal Navy.

The General Service Medal & Gulf War (1991) medals are certainly just named Royal Navy, as for the others I couldn`t say, but I`d assume the same. Now Long Service Medals, I think I`m right in saying that they are named to the ship you where on at the time, how that would work if you were land based I couldn`t say, then again I could be totally wrong, can anyone else help me out here? :whistle:

Interestingly I`m not aware of any subs being involved in the Air Operations Iraq phase between the to Iraq wars, however, the Royal Navy was certainly involved, so it might also be possible to add the General Service Medal to this list. But assuming that no subs where involved, this medal if awarded to the sailor whilst serving in a different role or on a surface ship, I suppose wouldn`t count as a medal, to a submariner, if you see what I mean. So to recap. We`ve certainly got.... The South Atlantic Medal (with Rosette) Gulf War 1 (with clasp) Gulf War 2 (with clasp) OSM Afghanistan (not sure about clasp) NATO with clasp Kosovo. & possibley GSM with clasp AOI. Not to forget, The Queens Golden Jubilee & the LSGC medals.

Add to this, HMS Triumph was also involved in the initial strikes.

After Operation Veritas, the attack on Al-Qaeda and Taliban forces following the 9/11 attacks in the United States, it emerged that HMS Trafalgar was the first Royal Navy submarine to launch Tomahawk cruise missiles against Afghanistan. So theres the Operational Service Medal for Afghanistan added to the growing list.

HMS Otus was also present during thr first Gulf War (1991)

HMS Opossum served during the Gulf War (1991) and inserted SBS special forces teams into Iraq and occupied Kuwait. So that would also add the Gulf medal to the list.

HMS Turbulent On 16 April 2003 HMS Turbulent was the first Royal Navy vessel to return home from the war against Iraq. She arrived in Plymouth flying the Jolly Roger after launching thirty Tomahawk cruise missiles. So the Iraq medal again.

In the late 1990s, HMS Splendid became the first British ship to be armed with American-built Tomahawk cruise missiles. Splendid fired Tomahawks in battle against Yugoslav targets in Belgrade during the Kosovo War. She again fired these weapons against Iraqi targets in the 2003 invasion of Iraq. So the crew of the Splendid would have the NATO medal for Kosovo & the Iraq medal (with clasp). Golden Jubilee & LSGC are also highly likely. Prior to 1990... Her first major conflict came in 1982 when Argentine forces invaded the British held Falkland Islands. Splendid was one of the first submarines to reach the islands, arriving mid April, after sailing from Faslane. Unlike HMS Conqueror, Splendid did not fire in anger, she did however provide valuable reconnaissance to the British Task Force on Argentine aircraft movements. Splendid's presence also ensured that the Argentine Navy would not dare leave its port. So you`ll have the South Atlantic Medal in there too.

HMS Splendid (swiftsure class submarine) & HMS Turbulent (Trafalgar class submarine), where both to my knowledge involved in Op Telic 1, but as to how much of an active role they both played, I couldn`t say. However, either way the crews of both these subs I amuse would be entitled to the Iraq medal with clasp?
