    1. Hi Thomas

      thanks for your reply...

’love me it’  is a typo! Think I intended ‘like it.’..

i had put a bit more effort into the previous post, I was asking if it looked ‘okay’ and for any thoughts on the stamps.

thanks again for your help tifes

      Best wishes

      Hi Tony,

what´s the question? Sorry , I didn't get it. It´s Military Merit Cross III. Class with War Decoration and Swords, so-called 3th issue (circa 1866-1918). This one originates from WWI.  It´s extremely hard to recognize hallmarks or maker´s mark from these pics (for me it´s impossible)  but obviously it´s silver ("head of Diana" ??? on the suspension, left side) and on the right side I would say it´s also manufacturer´s mark but I can´t see it. However, it doesn't matter...just MVK 3. Klasse mit KD und Schwertern...very nice and good preserved one but also very common decoration indeed.

      Regards,

      Tomas (tifes)

      Hi Gents

      My new bar...

Austro Hungarian is my first love so I couldn't resist this.

possibly.... this is glaringly wrong to you more knowledgeable Gents.

Would an MM cross be awarded without lower level bravery awards first?

don't spare my feelings if you have doubts - I genuinely would rather hear your thoughts Gents.

i won't lie... i paid out 250 plus post for this. Think it was a bit cheap? And I didn't know enough about it either, not enough to justify getting it - but - it didn't stop me, and, with mixed emotions I did...

      You Gents know the feeling??

      that "gulp" feeling...??

      ---////------/--

So when it turned up I wanted to know :

was EK maker marked? Looked too crisp and new.

was the Military Merit Cross genuine ?

was the bar good quality ?

      Was the bar original?

and if so had the original medals been swapped out?

      And so on

      and so on !!

      and then so on!

      -------

Some pics first then my thoughts on it....

      ---/----/-//-----

to me, the quality of the medal mounting/bar is top notch. ( hope not too good?)  it is so rigid still. The folds do not move. It's thick, padded, uv negative and just a few stitches snapped to rear.

I can't get to the ring of the MM cross without stressing the ribbon and cannot see how the award isn't original to the bar.

Fellow Gent cimbineus has told me that at first glance this MM Cross looks good, a Friedrich Rothe made example.

I had to (had to!) check the EK ring. It was tricky to prise the ribbon of the Iron Cross from the ring. I was relieved to see a mark (800?) (silver) I  haven't poked any further yet... The ring is blackened, in contrast to the medal which now appears to have been cleaned, rather than new. The ring is small though - not the size I have on others or personally seen before..  that worries me slightly - should it? I hope to hear its because it's on a later bar and not period ww1 issue!? Or other similarly reassuring reason!.

      So Gents

after my longest worded post ever (usually 3 words) I hope you like....

Hello again Farkas , The tall kepi of the man is a pre ww1 model . concerning to the medals I believe that the one next to the button is a Signum laudis with red peacetime ribbon and the third medal that of Franz Joseph conmemoration 1848 1908 .

could the middle one be a 48 -98 jubilee medal ? or would he also have had others ie long service type decorations? just curious....

    4. Hi Alex

Ive really enjoyed your thoughts and they were by no means ‘too long’. So thank you for your reply....

i feel the same about copies as you I believe. Each to their own I say. These are (hopefully) the first copies I’ve bought, certainly the first by choice!  I just wanted them.

I have to admit the ‘extra’ markings on the EK1 got my hopes up for a while but I hadn’t noticed them prior to purchase so they didn’t influence my decision.

      thanks again

      best wishes

      ps your pics look great.

I think I might clean mine up...

    5. Buenos días Bayern.....

      Brilliant !

how do you know all this?? Are you 126years old??

You realise that if I ever lived next door to you - you’d never get rid of me!!

      Anyway....

      As it’s about medals....

Assuming the first medal is a ‘1908 jubilee’  and the other two are on a blue or red ribbon and I think the third is a ‘signum laudis’.....what would you guess for them?

And as it’s a tall hat which means earlier( i think )would you say the date for the pic is likely to be pre-war ?

      cheers

    6. Hi Gents

my excuse is alcohol and an accidental bid of 2551.00 instead of 25.51....

by the time I found out I could cancel the bid I had convinced myself It was worth a punt and then bought it anyway! (And it’s mate)

all advice I found and info I saw said ‘don’t’  but I still did!

      just posted pics....

I wonder why people do this.   Do you think they just don't know, or don't want to learn.   With all the information printed, and on line about the Iron Cross, you would think people would be better informed

    7. Hi gents

i wonder if you like either of these?

i have bought these with no expectations

they look like every copy/fake I see! (Munchen 9 = bad!)

I was just hoping the star is an older copy than some! Looks like 3 part construction  but I guess modern copies would be too.?

im now hoping the EK1 is also more interesting than a modern copy but I wasn’t expecting it to be...

The EK1 is though faintly marked/stamped ?35 (835?) above the maker mark. Looks like 2 part construction. And has the ghost of a rectangular stamp to the top rear.

However both are non magnetic crosses (bad? -,keep hearing about magnetic cores)  but the screws are magnetic - also the ‘star’ surround is slightly magnetic but really only a bit....

a fellow gent tells me the EK1 back disc is Russian or Slav so not original...
