Hi Gents
ive been looking for this for weeks on and off!
I think it is .... Part of a report relating to The Battle of Jutland. (Marked Diagram II)
It portrays a hyperthetical situation if the fleet had deployed differently. A bit beyond my understanding but still interesting and I think worth sharing.....
I bought it at the same time and from the same place as the photo so I thought I'd list it alongside....
size 11 x 13 inches
a lithograph image (?!)
hope its of interest Gents

Hi Gents, The Prussian
i was looking up a few things today so kept an eye out for yours... I see yours as an X in a rectangle? The bottom half is obscured but I didn't find anything with a matching top half that wasn't a complete X.
having said that...
nothing quite matched your sign, if an X, either.
there are only a few close to matching. I wonder how strictly the designs were adhered to?
could it be this without the 'wheels'?
Doubt this one.
This one is trapezoid shaped and late war. Your pic looks earlier to me?
Lastly. Crude version of this? Various motorbike units used varieties of an 'X' inside a circle.

That I couldn't say. It's certainly odd, using the obverse die for a plain badge with the reverse die for a detailed badge.
Yes odd isn't it.
When I first noticed the reverse detail I initially thought the front must have been rubbed plain but thought that surely the 'top' part detail would have more loss of detail too.
i hadn't thought about different die(s) until your replies so really appreciate your input Arthur

The wording reads 'South Africa' at the top and 'Suid- Afrika' at the bottom. This is the SA Artillery collar badge. Worn in chrome since the 1970s, and also used as a beret badge. There are several variants, some with the wording on the obverse.
Thanks Arthur
thats good to know
May I ask, do you think then that these would have been issued as I have them? I.e. plain obverse yet detailed rear.
Thanks again

There is a known fake for the Scharnhorst. It is known as the "Belfast" fake as it was sold nearby where the HMS Belfast resides. It has fooled many collectors. The tip with Scharnhorst tallies is that they need to be not cut (100cm or longer) in any way or made with metallic thread. The one you shown has the tell-tale sign of being a Belfast fake. I am sorry.
You can search around for Belfast Scharnhorst and learn more.
Best Regards,

Hi JustinG
im sorry I somehow missed your reply until now. Belated thanks...
since I posted this I found a thread on here somewhere that described the Belfast tallies....
The description matched mine in all detail it provided.
So, I agree with you Sir, it's one of those.
It wasn't matching a genuine tally from the start so I'm happy that its more than just a modern rip off I think - so I'm not disappointed....
thanks again

Mate, it isn't free so pm me your email and I'll send the papers over. There's nothing exciting there but it tells you a little about the man behind the medal.

Received safe and sound thanks again Tony

Early Scottish rifles busby - Bugler Jacobs 1246
in Great Britain: Militaria: Badges, Uniforms & Equipment
Posted
Hi Gents,
Hi Peter
of course you're right. I once went 'backstage' at my local museum and they were overwhelmed.
I admit I had hoped more than one of the many organisations I contacted would reply.... with someone saying 'yes please it's special' .
**i think we need more museums! **
Anyway....
There is good news.
Bugler Jacobs Busby has finally found its forever home. It will be part of a personal collection of similar headwear and will be cared for and enjoyed as it should....
A happy ending.
Many thanks for all your thoughts throughout Gents...
