    1. Hi Gents

i got this as part of a job lot. For about a quid!

the back looks different to more modern tally I have seen but I really know nothing about these.

there are two sets of three little holes each just either side of the writing which line up if it were pinched together not tucked inside. I'm guessing an arm  tally wouldn't have the 'tails' hanging

      but

its only just over 2ft (66cm ish) so surely too short for a cap tally.

      I like it whatever.....

    2. Hi Gents

i've read these were painted green and the liner changed when brackets were added but this still has a 3 part liner.

it came from the estate of a retired antique shop owner so I'm happy it is in its vintage condition but maybe it's not that straightforward a find.

hope you like it, if you'd like more specific photos please ask.

Sadly... This has had a hard time. Moths have been well fed...and the front has been chopped open- to remove the plume holder I guess.

but happily there is more to it.

I was unaware when I got it that it was named:

      "b company.  Sco Rifles.

      no.1246

      Bugler

      C. A.Jacobs ". (G.A.?)

      And labelled:

      "Dobson and sons"

Sadly Bugler Jacobs is apparently not on medal rolls and I know no more.....

I suspect that the perceived need for 'funnies' - DD Shermans and some of the others - was past and the losses among tank units were very high, so the component regiments were re-assigned to other formations.  Just a guess.

      Thanks Pete

sadly losses would explain it and as you say the funnies had served their purpose by end of July/Aug.

Seems a shame for those who might have served this brigade for years not to finish their fight under the same name...

ive never researched my goodies in any depth but think I should take a closer look at this one

      thanks again

I think it's Verband Badische Jäger. It's not Freikorps and doesn't belong on this thread.

Apologies- just saw the rest of your answer.

      Farkas,

Lovely item and in excellent condition, I have seen similar items to other Units which have been described as being made by German PoW's and for some reason the font used in the carving here has a Germanic feel to it to my eye.

      A great find, well done.

      Simon

      Hi Simon

Thanks for that, i hadn't noticed before but now you point it out I would agree.

      the 7 is odd

the 't' splays out at the bottom and the J of June is unusual too.

I do like the thought that this is POW made....

      Thanks again Coldstream

    9. Hi Gents

id like to share this DDay period wooden plaque commemorating the British 27th Armoured Brigade.

It recently came from a house clearance but sadly I know nothing of the owner. Not my usual field and I first read it as the 21st. I didn't appreciate the history connected to the 27th....

      It is 285mm in diameter...

the reverse is perfectly smooth so I think was done on a lathe.

But the front is hand worked. The letters chiselled from blocks.

The wording around the edge is:

      '27 ARMOURED BRIGADE

      JUNE NORMANDY AUGUST'

I've only seen the 'Seahorse' on one site and it was facing to the right not the left as here

      hope you like it Gents

Good advice, Bayern - this page, in general

      Generalstab_oberst_vs_01.jpg

      Hi all

thanks for joining in with me, I joined knowing I've got a lot to learn!!

The first mistake I made when trying to identify the rank was the mistaken belief that the Major collars were in silver. I've looked at the tables I had referred to and they were mainly in black and white. Then with coloured plates/illustrations silver was used for majors and gold for generals.

The all important bit was, as you've shown, the black backing, and as I now know, the fact it could be either silver or gold depending on regiment colour/buttons.....

so thanks for putting me straight.

      Cheers tony

Medical officers (Sanitätswesen) had green waffenrocks, but with a single row of buttons and with red collar and cuffs.

This is a waffenrock for a major of the general staff (Generalstab).

      Very nice piece.

      Thanks Wraith42

If it did belong to a Major then would that mean the star on my piece is silver coloured ? and does the black felt band above the angle help denote the difference to the Major Generals which would be red?

on a phone and I'm struggling with uploading photos.... file too big... tried cropping them but not so good then.   Will work on some but would still enjoy requests....

      Hi Bayern

      thanks for pointers

ill post some better pics of the hat asap. There is a little pouch sown into the crack at the top where the gold band reaches the top so I think it did have feathers once upon a time!

      can I just check please...

do you think that this is -

      a silver or gold star?

      on silver or gold collar?

      ---//

i had to Google waffenrock so please be patient with me!!

      Cheers

      tony

    13. I was was lucky enough to get these together recently.

The Jacket... Slightly worn inside lining but outside it's in cracking condition. With Bicorn hat and the 7 foot long (2mtrs+)  sash folded for wear around the waist....

I hope you like them Gentlemen....

    14. Hi Bayern and Accer

after reading your post I checked a photo with my GF and his men.

Looked at the pic before and noticed the mix of uniforms, in particular the caps.... some I think of as Austrian style- peaked- others looked hungarian. I hadn't given it too much thought.

but ive just noticed the collar on the one man right of centre front.

it possibly matches the one in Accers photo, I think the pocket designs are similar too.

The photo was taken in Podlipie in 10 Oct 1917.

ive always thought this was his IR83 platoon but now wonder if these are men from different units?

      perhaps a training course?

I'm going to try and upload my photo....

      Hi Ace...

the map above shows part of a map of the districts each regiments recruited from. It shows Koszeg in Szombathely District.

So Koszeg provided men to I.R.83.

Infantry Regiment 83 of the Austro-Hungarian Army (KuK) The Combined/common army.

      aka

      General Von Schikofsky No 83

so, as it happens, your Great Grandfather served alongside my Grandfather in the 83rd!

hope this is correct and helpful

      cheers

      tony

    16. That's a shame - a different continent no less. That settles that!

Still I wonder if there is a family connection? I'd be surprised if Frantisek is a name used that much - so perhaps it was a Grandfathers name,or similar, then used by cousins or related family....

either way - doesn't help find your man.

      A final thought.

In 35's region there were a couple or so Divisional/Brigade HQ (post 1968 ). They may have been there earlier. I don't know anything about recruitment for General Staff or their records. But. If your man had the means to emigrate to America then possibly he had status/high rank while serving?

Dont know where you'd start but maybe it's a possibility.

      best of luck

      Tony

    17. Hi Daniel

I've joined so I can tell you that I think you have surely found your man!

the name is not one of two. There is only one that matches the man you search. The odds are it's him.

i think if you work from that assumption you could then find more facts that fit or don't.,...

may I just add these thoughts....

•are military Dop and Dob correct or are your papers correct ?

      - yours are surely!

      So I say

Army copied down something wrong one day

      or

he lied to them for some reason.......

      ---------///////---------

      Best Wishes

      tony

((that's me keeping it short!  I have more thoughts))
