Personally I believe Knauer to be the main manufacturer, not retailer, of Oldenburg FAXs.
As Knauer also made their own screwbacks (ie with the standard wartime award obverse design) why would they outsource from Meybauer in Berlin?
For the record, I've seen more than one Meybauer screwback that I KNOW to have been married (not by me) with a Knauer etui in the past few years.
But hey, 90 years after the fact, who's going to know for sure.
Regards
Mike
You only have to read the stamp inside the case. Knauer was Hofgoldschmied that means he produced for the royal family. He was not only a dealer.

Verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry nice (now) !
What's on the reverse of the Saxon lifesaving medal? Is it an old Royal type or a Weimar version?
Hi Rick,
there is now Weimar version of saxony LSM. It is the last model of the imperial one. I can't say if awarded or privat purchase.
But probably privat purchase then i think the Weimar government never award imperial medals.

How nice that the documents still accompanying the awards.
Could you post the life-saving document? Never seen one from Saxony.
Do you know the reason for the award?
This is an unussual case. He got a "Anerkennungsurkunde" in Juli 1920 when he was out of army and visit the university. He save the live of an old women
for drowning. The document is signed by the prime minister.

Let's save the picture on the site for posterity. If Alex don't mind?
OK, OK. It looks better. This bar is out of a group with all the documents incl. saxony life saving medal.

AGGGHHH!!!! That is the most horrible "eBay quality" scan I've ever seen, Alex!!!
Rick i am happy with me HP scaner that i posses over 6 years. It cost a lot of money six or seven years ago.
So an Epson scaner is not on my wish list.
But if you like it bigger, i make it bigger for you. I think everything that need to be shown is on this picture.
Everything you want Rick.

Hi Alex, the only full sized solid examples of these I have seen were not marked but I have seen a picture of a hollow stamped example very simular with a Godet mark. Hard to find in this style. Did you go to Kassel? Any aviation badges? Ferg1.
Hi Fergus,
i didn't go to Kassel. The most of the Luftschiffer badges don't have this banderola. Ithought that only one maker built in this style.
I also think that this is the official style, because i seen this in many old literature.

Here is the newest addition to my aviation badge collection. Halbgrosse/prinzen size marine Luftschiffer badge , badge is about 44mm wide and struck in solid silver. Nice detail overall especially the gondala's and ribbing to the zep even the acorn cups have a pimpled finish to them ! I have seen one or two full sized examples of this type in silvered buntmetal but this is the first half size in this style I have ever seen. Ferg1.
Vary nice badge ferg. I like this style of Luftschiffer badges. Never seen an original size badge in this style. Wich maker built this one?
All i seen have not this banderola.

Here is my latest bird to fly in , nice half size/Prinzen Flieger-Erinnerungsabzeichen by Paul Maybauer, silvered bronze. Not marked but clearly by this maker. Most of the silvering is worn/polished away leaving a dark bronze patina . The detail is stunning, almost better than a full size example. Ferg1.
Vary nice badge. I also would buy this one. Vary nice to see a cut out crown.

The wings and prop are the same on both examples. Converting an observers badge required having the wings/prop device in order to make the modified badge shown here.
Let me propose another possibility. The wings/prop may have broken off an original and the wreath lost. It's possible that someone at a much later date acquired the wing/prop part, but not the original wreath. It doesn't take rocket science for someone who wants to jack up the price of a broken item, to "covert" it to something more expensive by making it look like something else, and then suggest it's a "rare" example. Never understimate the power of greed and profit motives leading to someone cutting up a relatively common observers badge, in order to make (and sell) something at a much higher price.
When these types of badges were still being made and worn, they weren't all that expensive, and for a few marks, they could be ordered through catalogues, etc.
I'm not so sure the item is a period modification/conversion at all. Then there's the matter of whether you trust the source....
Les
The badge realy looks like a cut out observer badge dousn't matter who made this one.

I think its absurd to discuss this badge. The bavarian badges are a mine field. I think no one can definitely say what is genuine what private purchase and what is a post war production and wich one is modern make. If someone like his badge and think is genuine, so what. There are a lot of assertions but no facts.
For me i don't buy any bavarian aviation badges more, only they come directly from the family and it looks good in me eyes.
@VINLAND30
If you and your friend like this badge it's OK. Not all people share the same opinon but if you feel confident its your problem.

I don't like it. The details are so bad and i'm not sure if this one are a badge called "57er". i'm not sure if there exist 57er badges. Who should wear such a badge.
But for 60p you can't make something wrong.
