    1. Hello Jef,

      Thank you for your interest and helpful replies. I've attached a photo of the medal, as you can see it has no eyelet. It's about 6,5 cm wide and 3mm thick. So it seems to match the size of the patriotic medals you posted. Just like you write; it seems impossible to find any information about these kind of medals. Now, I gather from your medals that these were created postwar?

      So that means;

      • The medals are nicht-staatlich
      • Do not have any official charachter
      • Created post-war
      I would assume then, that they were handed out by patriotic organisations after the war, but why and whatfor? Maybe the reply from redcross is correct; fund-raisers, yes, but perhaps for relief for wounded soldiers or families of fallen soldiers?

    2. I've just gotten a Belgian medal that I can't quite identify. First of all, it's not a military award but rather a memorial medal of some kind. It's round, has no ribbon ring, and shows Jezus on the cross appearing from the sky with a dying soldier on the ground. Inscription reads;

      SACRE COEUR DE JESUS PROTEGEZ LA BELGIQUE.

      Below is the year 1914. The backside shows a figure meant so show Jesus and the words:

      POUR L'HUMANITE - POUR LA PATRIE

      Can this be a religious award, rather than some sort of military memorial award?

    3. Dis this Regiment even exist? In the records (family-archive, so nothing official) of one officer I read he served in "Ulanen-Regiment 1". While reading this site I saw that the only Ulanen-Rgt. numbered 1 (apart from the Garde, then) is the one located in Militisch/Ostrowo, where this officer from Hannover never set foot most likely. The title of this regiment Kaiser Alexander von Ru?land is nowhere mentioned. Could it be that the family historian mistook with the actual unit, K?nigs-Ulanen-Regiment (1. Hannoverisches) Nr. 13, which was stationed in Hannover, for Ulanen-Regiment 1?

    4. Good questions, Rick, I wish I knew the answer! I'm just looking for some informations regarding the von Treskow clan for a related noble family from Germany. I can't tell you much alas, other then that the only photo we still have of him was taken in Metz when it was still German. The uniform he is wearing is clearly pre-1914. I'm "blind" when it comes to imperial matters so I can't be of much help.

    5. hi Chip,

      Thanks a lot for your help. If you don't mind, I have some follow-up questions;

      I can say that it is cavalry, a one-year-volunteer and that the number "1" without the serif on the bottom is more typically Bavarian.

      What is the Dienstgrad? To my untrained eye in imperial matters it looks an officer shoulder board.

      The second photo appears to show a group all from the same unit. The difference is that the man in the center is wearing a field gray uniform and the rest have the full color uniforms.

      I see, so this uniform is what we are accustomed in seeing German soldiers wearing in photos from WW1? Whereas the others are older issues? What colour would they have been?
